Taranis/D8RIIplus binds but won't move servos
Taranis/D8RIIplus binds but won't move servos
Hi folks, first post. Hopefully you can help me with my Taranis radio issue. I searched the forum but could not find any posts pertaining to this, here or elsewhere.
My situation:
Bone stock Taranis was successfully bound to a X8R receiver that came with it, and I flew successfully with it.
Subsequently bought a D8RIIplus receiver, and tried to bind. It will bind, but it won't move the servos. The servos sort of make a chittering sound in response to stick movements, but won't move. I don't think the ESC is being controlled correctly either.
I set up a new model, with the default plane template.
It does get telemetry info, and when the lights blink on the receiver I can hear a faint noise inside the Taranis responding. May be a red herring but usually noobs like me leave stuff out.
In short: I'm sure it's binding but can't determine why the servos seem to "hear" the Taranis but not move.
Any ideas? Thanks! -Brian
Looking forward to lots of visits here as I try to set up my Taranis to control an RCExplorer V3 tricopter with integrated naze32.

If the red light on the rx is blinking then it is not bound..
When bound you should get a solid light.. I don't know how you're getting telemetry..

Re: Taranis/D8RIIplus binds but won't move servos
thank you for your speedy reply,
I get a solid red light with a very dim green light. When you move sticks, both lights blink or maybe just the red one does.
I believe I'm getting telemetry because it is bound, but I don't know why the servos won't move, only make noise when commanded.

I think that is not normal.. How are you powering the rx and servos?

Re: Taranis/D8RIIplus binds but won't move servos
During that testing, the receiver was powered with a phone charger that was measured at 6.1 volts. I don't have an ESC with BSC to power it.
The servos work fine when I plug them into my original X8r receiver.
The firmware I'm running is bone stock Taranis. The radio was bought about one month ago.
I heard something somewhere about someone adjusting some things in this thread:
http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1722028
"If you go to Model Setup>page 2 then scroll down to Proto make sure it is set to PPM and you need to change the setting next to where it says PPM. I found anything above 350uSec and the servos start to work. be careful take the prop off just in case as I had the motor spin up on my EDF once I change this setting. Thankfully no harm done."
However, on page 2 of my model setup, there is no "proto" option nad I can't find any setting for PPM. Could this be the issue?

When binding to the X8R, you should be in D16 mode, but when binding the the D8RIIplus you need to be in D8 mode.

Yes, I saw that in a video online, and I will verify that I made that setting change. I'm going to go try once more to re-bind the receiver and move some servos- That way I can describe what is happening with precision, and answer any questions that come up.
Thanks again for the help guys. BRB. -Brian

Re: Taranis/D8RIIplus binds but won't move servos
It could also be that the phone charger doesn't supply enough power for the rx and servos?

Re: Taranis/D8RIIplus binds but won't move servos
Ok so I just tried it again.
I'm powering the receiver with a phone charger that outputs 6.1 volts and is rated 350 mah. Should be enough.
WHen only the receiver is on, i get a steady red blink, no green.
When the radio is on and set to the right model, the red light goes solid mostly, but blinks out while the radio says "telemetry lost" periodically. The green light also blinks during this.
I can tell the radio and receiver are connected, but no servo will work and now they don't make any noise at all when plugged into any port and the sticks are moved.
I might just have to send it back. Went to LHS today but poor selection and even worse pricing sent me away.
-Oh, how much mah should a 9g servo need?

Re: Taranis/D8RIIplus binds but won't move servos
You don't have any other battery? Maybe try with 3 normal alkaline AA batteries in series. That should give around 4.5V and it would supply enough juice to power the servo and rx.
What you describe have all the signs of the receiver browning out.

Re: Taranis/D8RIIplus binds but won't move servos
Ok, I swapped my d8r to the x8r and it won't move the servos either, but will when installed in my plane, so the charger is the culprit or part of it. I'm off to try the d8r on the plane's ESC.
Thanks for the help so far!

Re: Taranis/D8RIIplus binds but won't move servos
I moved the d8r to my plane, with a normal ESC with BEC. It worked after rebinding again. Thanks for helping me get there.
THis shows that there was something wrong with powering the receiver with the phone charger, though I can't imagine what.
Next I will try removing the ESC signal socket, so it only gets + and - voltage. if that works, I know it's just power level, if not, I'll know that somehow it needs signal of some sort.
That would leave me wondering where that signal would come from on my eventual tricopter, as the PDB frame only has + and - that seem to be for the receiver.
Thanks again for your assistance.

Re: Taranis/D8RIIplus binds but won't move servos
I think your phone charger wasn't supplying enough current causing the voltage to drop too low for the rx and servo.

Taranis/D8RIIplus binds but won't move servos
A charger is a totally unsuitable power source for a receiver. It's designed for a different sort of load, may have a high noise level and could even damage the receiver. What's needed is either a battery (3 or 4 alkalines will do fine) or a properly regulated source like an ESC or BEC.
The problem is likely not that the charger is unable to supply enough current but that the charge algorithm doesn't recognize the receiver as a proper battery. So it's a kind of brown out as jhsa suggests, but perhaps for a slightly different reason.

Re: Taranis/D8RIIplus binds but won't move servos
Been in RC for a few years with a experience is a few TXs. However, am new to OpenTX with a new Taranis QXT7 Access and a few Archer R4s. Manually setup the TX with a test model and bound to RX, operated fine. But when loading a model created on the Companion App discovered the same issue as described above, i.e. bind ok but no servo response... with 30yrs experience in computers, I set out to find the cause. After about 6hrs or changing all the variables and parameters of the model, I discovered the cause: changing the channel range from 1-4 (coz it's an R4!) to 1-8 (which is the limit for the parameter available on the TX) that got things working!.... confirmed the bug a few times by cycling the setting and was able to reproduce the bug... so Please fix OpenTX team... still an ammazing App, thanks

Edit: Deleted post
I didn't understand the problem which I believe is that Companion allows setting the channel range below 1-8 for access and the transmitter does not and doing so will not work with the R4 receiver. I haven't seen the specifications for the access receivers so perhaps setting the channel range below 8 is not allowed in access or perhaps access only allows certain ranges and if that is the case this would appear to be a bug in Companion and you should open an issue in github https://github.com/opentx/opentx/issues
