turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
hi,
i plan to flash my turnigy 9x and prepared all the necessary steps. but just after i finished soldering the cables to the 6 pads and try to switch on my radio, it failed.i took off all the cables hopefully it will revert to default but sadly it didn't. please tell me it can be fixed.
thank you.

Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
It was just after you soldered the wires? Or:
1 - Did you attempt to program the radio? What programmer do you have and what PC program are you using to program what firmware to the radio?
2 - Did it fail after you just powered the radio using the programmer?
We need a bit more information so we can help you.

Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
yes. just after i soldered the wires. and yes, i am trying to program or flash the radio but never get the chance to even plug it in the usbasp. after i finish soldered, i tried to switch it on, but it failed. so i quickly took off the wires back thinking i might have short circuited something, but still doesn't work. hopefully there is no major damage because my knowledge and skills are limited, so as my tools. i am not sure what type of programmer, it just labelled avr-asp-prog, avr usbasp on the package. i ordered it online and seem pretty common. i don't have any pc program and the firmware just yet, i just manage to prepare the hardware first and was just to do some research in here about the software tools needed but then, this happened.
Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
Use a magnifying glass and check in detail your soldering and de-soldering for possible defect/bridges etc.

Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
but i just desoldered them back and can't see any possible defect. or maybe the board already busted when i switch the radio on?
i can't find any broken trace or components and didn't smell anything burnt. anyway this is my second radio after i fried my flysky 9x.
i bought this spare radio after i tried to repair my flysky. i just made it worse trying to repair it. hopefully this spare radio can still be repaired.

Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
i will attach some more photos. on this photo where the part i have circled, i found the circular circle or trace outside the pad kinda missing or somehow scrapped off? could that be the reason. if it is, can it still be fixed and how?
Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
these are the condition after i soldered and desoldered the wires. could any of you trace anything wrong?
Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
Soldering those 6 wires to the board is not such a big thing.
Vcc, Gnd, Mosi, Miso, Rst and Sck.
(pic taken from Helles German manual) Could be, that there was a short circuit on the other side of your cable or your soldering equipment killed the board.
Other option, recheck all connections between board and tx and try again ...
Good luck

Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
i have a pretty moderate soldering skills, but i thought it should not be that hard, but again, this happened almost every time i touch or trying to repair electronics component.
i have checked several times, with my limited knowledge, i can't seem to find anything wrong with it. hurm...so i guess that's it. there goes my 2 radios.

Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
Again, disconnect ALL cables between board and tx and reconnect one by one. Did you do that?
You are giving up very fast!
You are giving up very fast!
Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
yes i did. i reconnect them back on...and just disconnect them for the second time and clean all the pads with alcohol. and i don't have the courage to solder them back on again unless i know what is wrong and what i'm doing because it seems the more i try to fix things, the worse it gets. i am hoping this board is still fixable and still not heavily busted, so i will not touch it until i have a pretty clear idea what to do and the risk. i never thought soldering a few of wires on the pads could lead to this.
Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
Keep calm, I have seen people with less skills than you repairing their boards. So, lets begin some testing
First a question or two. Did your radio work before you soldered the wires for the first time? Did you actually turn it ON before you started working on it?
Doesn't your radio make any sound when you turn it ON?
Please answer this questions while I prepare my next post, so you can start measuring stuff. Ahh, please post a good picture from the switch board. The one where the power switch is. You do not need to remove it at this point, just a picture of the traces..

Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
While You do what I asked before, and assuming you have a multimeter and know how to use it, Please REMOVE THE BATTERY from the radio, and looking at the picture below, measure the resistance across each of the inductors circled in RED. They should measure as a short (very close to zero ohms).

Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
yes. the radio was fine before. when i turn it on, it doesn't make any sound and no display.
i have a multimeter and have a fair skills using them as long u guide me. i just measured it, it shows about 1.2-1.5 for each inductor.

But I leave it to João. I am not a "specialist" for the 9x
Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
i'm sorry, what can i do with those connections?. but i think those are ok except for the fact that half of the green protective cover is gone. not sure why. i really hope everything from now on does not require any soldering or at least a very easy one with less risk because i don't want to risk damaging the board even more..kalle123 wrote:I meant those connections.kasturiGM wrote:... i don't have the courage to solder them back on again

I have seen bend pins etc. and the positioning of the flat cable can be a bit tricky. Just recheck ...kasturiGM wrote:i'm sorry, what can i do with those connections?. but i think those are ok except for the fact that half of the green protective cover is gone. not sure why. i really hope everything from now on does not require any soldering or at least a very easy one with less risk because i don't want to risk damaging the board even more..
Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
i have just checked all those you mentioned. everything seems pretty good and i think it has always been that way. and i think even if the cables and pins are not ok, the buzz will still making sound.kalle123 wrote:I have seen bend pins etc. and the positioning of the flat cable can be a bit tricky. You mean the inductors measure 1.5 and 1.2 Ohms? which scale did you use on the multimeter?kasturiGM wrote:

I can't see what green protective cover you are referring to?
Will prepare some more measurements for you.. this time you will be measuring voltages, so be very careful NOT TO SHORT ANYTHING with the multimeter probes. That could destroy things further.
João
EDIT: Please connect both sides of the radio and make sure the 12 pin connector coming from the back of the radio is fully inserted. See if the radio works this time.. Don't forget to plug the battery

Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
i am using that scale. i believe it is x100. is it correct?
if you see the picture above, there is some copper part exposed on the display header. the green coating is gone, but still connected. so i think there is nothing wrong there.
that is what i am afraid of, damaging the board even more but will try my best and hopefully i don't have to waste my money to buy another radio.
from where i live, its pretty much expensive and i can't find any pcb board specialist here. if only you guys live nearby.

Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
I can see it now.. You mentioned the red circle so I thought it was somewhere near it, and not near the LCD Connector. Please disconnect the battery, set your multimeter to read resistance, the 200 scale is OK. measure between the 2 pins as shown on the picture below. they should be connected.. If not, it means the track is damaged.

Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
yes i was referring to the red circle before. i don't have a better camera, but if you look closely, on the outer layer of the pad should be a dark green circle right. mine was kinda eroded. but looking at your board, i think mine should not be a problem since your board has been exposed to the copper layer. i mention about the lcd header before as to reply to kalee123. anyway, i have checked. it has continuity.jhsa wrote:While You do what I asked before, and assuming you have a multimeter and know how to use it, Please REMOVE THE BATTERY from the radio, and looking at the picture below, measure the resistance across each of the inductors circled in RED. Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
Ok, Connect all the connectors to the mainboard. Connect both halves of the radio. Connect the battery.
Turn the radio ON.
Set the multimeter to read voltages as shown by the red arrow on the picture (scale of 20V).
Next look at the other picture. VERY CAREFULLY to avoid shorts, measure the voltage between points A,B, C and ground.
The expected voltages for each point are marked in yellow.
What battery are you using to power the radio??

Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
ok, i measured all 3 points. i have all the necessary value for them. i am using 3s lipo for the radio.
Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
So, you are saying that all the voltages are there?
Battery voltage, 5V and 3.3V?
This is strange. Well, let me get to my PC and prepare some more measurements for you.
Next step is to find out if the processor is powered.
Meanwhile you could get a magnifying glass and check if there are shorts between pins of the processor. Sometimes, when we are soldering, little blobs of solder can jump and short the pins.
Another way to check this is to take a good resolution picture of the processor area.
Also make sure the LCD ribbon is fully inserted in the connector, it is straight, and it is locked in place..

Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
yes, the voltages are there. got all the readings correct. this is strange even for me. can't see any obvious bad tracing or components. a good resolution picture is not an option for me. those are the best pictures i can afford to take. even using a magnifier, i can't see any faulty components and tracing. even weirder is, clearly i am the only one who has this problem since no one has any experience about this. i even google it. i have seen people with less skill then i am sharing their success soldering and programming this radio. could i be the only one who failed attempting to do this?
done all that multiple times, but don't have any luck still.

Re: turnigy 9x won't turn on after soldering
No, you're not the only one having this kind of problem. I have seen similar problems, but it is a pain searching the forum, so the best thing to do in my opinion is to keep measuring until we find the problem
You don't always find bad components by looking at them They might look ok and still be damaged. It's not that easy unfortunately
I am preparing another picture or two with some measurements for you.

thanks man. hopefully in the end we'll find the solution. if only i know this is the risk i have to take, i might just leave the radio the way it was. can't afford to lose another radio.
