Flash failed. 9x possibly bricked. Please help.
Hello,
This is my first time flashing the 9x. I have the V2 (according to HK) and the Smartieparts V2.4 board. I'm flashing using eePe on Linux and can communicate with the 9x. I have read the existing firmware and saved it. I then tried to flash the 9x and it gets all the way through the verification and throws an error saying there's a mismatch. The 9x resets and starts acting crazy. sometimes the buzzer goes off constantly, sometimes there's garbled text on the screen but no matter what I couldn't get it to complete using avrdude 6.0.2.1.
I grabbed avrdude 5.11 and that let me complete the flash without error however it still isn't working on the transmitter. The transmitter still acts as above.
I've even tried manually erasing the firmware using avrdude on the command line. I've also verified the fuses are at 0e, 89, and ff (default) using eepe.
I don't know what else to try at this point.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Chris

Sorry for the slow response. It looks like my posts arebeing moderated.I assume it's because I'm a new user.
I downloaded it directly. Eepe did download something but I have no idea where it put the file. Not sure of the version but I got the hex file from this link:
http://er9x.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/er9x.hex
EDIT: the changelog says R817

I'm approving them so behave yourself
Please do here:
https://code.google.com/p/er9x/source/b ... k/er9x.hex
Then on the right side at the bottom right click on "View raw file" and select "Save link as"
Then save it SOMEWHERE YOU CAN FIND IT.. and flash it.. You could be downloading an html file instead.. Even if it saves with a .hex extension.
Please report back

Ok. I'll give it a try. I'm on my work laptop and I can't install drivers so I'll have to boot it back into linux. It'll take a few minutes.

Re: Flash failed. 9x possibly bricked. Please help.
NEVER, EVER use the -F option to flash your radio.. That can brick it, if you didn't already
Please USE EEPE to flash the radio.
Apart from having a blank screen, can you control a servo with it?
Please try to download your eeprom USING EEPE.
See if you are able to. If so, please save it where you can find it, zip it, and post it here..

Re: Flash failed. 9x possibly bricked. Please help.
ok Tried it again without the -F. same result. Unfortunately I can't control a servo without reconnecting the original module. (btw does the module have to be installed to flash?). I'm using an OrangeRX module with a CCPM only lemonrx receiver. I'll try bringing up cleanflight and seeing if it can see receiver input.
Here is the eeprom.

Re: Flash failed. 9x possibly bricked. Please help.
Just put the module back in. It's not even powering up so there's no way it'll even talk to the receiver.
Re: Flash failed. 9x possibly bricked. Please help.
What? the radio/module is not powering up?

Re: Flash failed. 9x possibly bricked. Please help.
The radio powers up, I get a blank screen and the backlight comes on. No beeps whatsoever and the module on the back doesn't do anything. no lights and no beeps.
Re: Flash failed. 9x possibly bricked. Please help.
Ok, the contrast was set to zero, hence the blank screen. Please flash the eeprom attached to my post (USING EEPE) back to the radio. You should have your display back..
I have seen this contrast set to zero thing quite often lately

Re: Flash failed. 9x possibly bricked. Please help.
Are you using eepe?
You're probably trying to flash the firmware with the eeprom file.
Open the eeprom I posted in eepe, and then go to the "Burn" menu and select, "Write memory to tx" then select the file and burn it.

Re: Flash failed. 9x possibly bricked. Please help.
Yes I'm using eepe. The write memory option is greyed out. I used the "Write EEPROM" option from the Burn menu.
I'll doo it again and grab some screen shots.

Load the eeprom in eepe and try again. Then the option shouldn't be geyed out.
Use the "open file" in eepe to load the eeprom I have posted.

On a whim I tried flashing using ZFLASHER AVR on my phone. I flashed the er9x.hex to flash. The attached photo shows the display now.

Hmmm, it looks like you will have to open that radio and check if the LCD ribbon is well inserted in the connector.
Take a picture of it and post it here please.. Before you do anything else..

Here's the photo of the ribbon cable.
And here's a video of what it does when you turn on the TX:

Re: Flash failed. 9x possibly bricked. Please help.
Don't expect any lights or sounds from the Orange module until it gets a valid PPM signal from the transmitter. In other words, till you sort out your firmware issues. Lack of sound and light does not indicate that it's not powered up.
Good luck. You are in good hands.

Well, I will say that the TX was working just fine after I installed the smartie parts programmer and before I flashed it.
