9XR Pro, DJT module, telemetry, what works?

Post by Irish Steve »

Hi Folks,

Have just finished setting up 2 Pro transmitters, they came with r202, and I've now got both of them running r204 with the updated voice files, and as far as I can tell, they are working, in that if I put servos on the receivers, they are moving with the movement of the sticks, so I've managed to fit the telemetry mods (2 resistors in each module) and then bind them and they still work, or at least they still work from the Tx to the Rx, and things like the stick calibration look to be right, if the display is to be believed, and a servo tester connected to the receiver is showing credible pulse values. The voice system is working, things like gear messages are spoken, but that's with the basic template that comes with the transmitter.

I have to sort out templates for (among other things) a Trex 500, a Bell 212 and a Bixler 2, we've been flying the Trex 500's and the Bell 212 on the standard 9X firmware without problems, but we're moving to the Pro to get the extra functionality that the better processor and firmware offers.

What's got me confused is what's possible, or not, with the telemetry side of things. I've tried looking through the manuals, and searched Google on the 9XR Pro and DJT, but at this stage, I'm confused as to what exactly is possible, or not, when using the D8RII plus receiver, partly because the Pro and 9XR are different, so I'm not sure that the procedures and capability are the same for the 2 transmitters.

Can anyone point me in the direction of an accurate guide to how to set up the telemetry, and what can or cannot be done with this module combination and the Pro transmitter, and if I need any other sensors, and how they work with this set up.
.

Thanks

Steve

When you say the 'standard 9x firmware', is this the stock firmware on a 9X, the stock firmware on a 9XR, or er9x on one or the other?

Mike,

Thanks for the quick response, and the pointer, I'd not noticed that one of the manuals had been updated to reflect the 204 changes. I have had a quick scan of the manuals before this, but didn't get much guidance on the Telemetry side of things, probably because it's an area that is somewhat more specialised, and not mainstream.

We've been using the basic stock 9X on the original firmware up to now, I've some sky boards to update them with sitting here, but the Pro gets us on to more capable firmware and hardware more rapidly, and we need some of those features to make life easier on the Bell 212, which is a very old and slightly different model, so the better flexibility of ER9X and the Pro transmitter makes that transition easier.

I've had a quick scan of the manual, and I will take a look at the FRSky information that's referenced there, I guess I was hoping that as the DJT is one of the few "standard" modules from HobbyKing that suits the Pro TX, there would have been a template with a working set up for basic testing of the module and receiver, just to make sure it's working correctly, and the mods are also OK. In order to test the basics, I've set up a 4 cell NiMh battery pack that can power the RX, and then plugged a couple of servos in, so I can test outside of a model, which I reckon is a lot simpler and quicker than connecting up to a model that's assembled.

Will see what I come up with, it's the wrong end of the day to get my head around some of this stuff, and I have to admit to finding Youtube tutorials very hard to work with, I prefer to have something that I can have in front of me (either on screen or hard copy) and refer to as I need information, in the order I want it, and videos just don't have that freedom.

I won't go into a minor rant about a supposed 9XR video tutorial on setting up the DJT that's doing things with the module powered up and the aerial not connected, that's living dangerously in my book, and risking the output stage of the module,

thanks guys, it will be worth it.
