I explain why I voted for Companion..
The forum now is called openTX, and changing companion's name to open tx manager would make believe that conpanion and open 9x reflect the only open firmware over here. well, that is not true.. and companion doesn't manage all of them 100%..
THIS IS NOT ALL ABOUT OPEN9X, or may I guess that the name will be also changed to OPENTX??
If that would be the case, then this (Custom Firmwares and Hacks for radio control transmitters that support opensource.) makes no sense..
Just my 2c, if they worth something that is..

I hope that people believe in common sense and vote for Companion..

open9x IS being renamed openTx, which is exactly why the proposed openTx manager.

As explained by Rob in the other thread, he decided to rename the forum independently.

As I already stated in the other thread I proposed companion as I like the idea of a "friendly companion" helping me to setup my radio...
And also I like to be able to support other firmwares...

So, no more place to er9x here.. I think we should have another forum then.. This is not fair.. And I think it is an insult to other people's intelligence.. I mean people that also work in other firmwares.. Mike for example..
I think it is a total desrespect for open source..
This will not be a ALL FIRMWARES forum anymore.. will be open9x = opentx forum..
Gentlemen, if this goes forward I have no other option but remove open9x from my radio until respect for the other developer(s) is reestablished..

Unless of course Mike is not continuing with the erky, er9x, er9x128 projects of course.. But still, this was not the purpose of this forum since the beginning..
Mayber a good name for the forum would be HOBBYKING??

João absolutely no, this is a all firmware forum...
only not any more only 9x related.
We are looking here to a revolution... self made radio, with different platform and different hardware including arduino boards.
The 9x forum name was also reductive...
For the same reason we changed the name of the open9x firmware as we have one firmware source tree for several HW and the name was misleading...

We are getting big and leading a revolution as we are all together....
Nobody wants to create divisions...

There are plenty names you could call to the firmware.. not the forum name.. I'm sorry but in my opinion it is not fair and IS an insult to other developers and to the other firmwares users.. That makes believe that there is only ONE firmware that happens to have the same name of the forum, (coincidence or not). I'm planning to use both firmwares because I value the work done on BOTH firmwares, but as I said will install er9x on both my radios if that's the case..

I think that the firmware that has grown on the 9x by the hard work of all developers here is going to become a lot more popular by the introduction of the new frsky system. We are hopefully all going to be able to take advantage from this higher popularity. A new type of users is going to start using open source firmwares on their transmitters. It might have been better to choose a different name for the forum than just the name of one specific firmware, but i am quite sure this was not done in order to discriminate any developer or to be disrespectfull.

I voted for openTX Manager. I think a lot of new users are going to start using the software in the near future. A lot of the new users will probably just use the resources and tools without wanting to take a deep dive and understanding all the background. They need a simple update tool to help them get the new versions/features.
The name should be related/similar to the firmware. OpenTX Manager will help to bind these to pieces of software together and it would help these new users to understand the system/idea behind it.

As i said above, it probably would have been better to use a different name for the forum than for the firmware, but IF the firmware is called openTX i think it's logicall to use openTX manager if we want a consistent naming scheme.
I understand what you are saying joao, but that is a different topic about forum / firmware naming That problem won't be solved by calling this tool companion* ...

Jump back to my thread on the forum name change.

You will see that the reasons for the name change are simple.

The firmwares run on multiple platforms, multiple hardware. 9x is no longer suitable. What happens when the 12ch frisky system comes out?

The name openTX is very clearly a name regarding open transmitter firmwares.

Er9x will always get support. It will always play a major part on the forum - as long as mike / others support it, and as long as the 9x is still made.

João, do try remember that Mike and Bertrand work together almost daily on the firmwares. They share ideas. Mike has made massive contributions to the frsky / open9x port. He is very much part of the open9x team - just also runs his own firmware version too. No issue. Anyone can. That is the joy of open source.

This is not a competition between firmwares or any kind of conspiracy, and certainly not something to get all hot over. The transmitter market is changing. As a result... Things are adapting and changing to keep pace.

To avoid flames I do not like I will share a goggle chat with Bertrand here, (I hope Bertrand will agree)
we were looking how to name the firmware in a unique way as openturanis was not so nice...

The chat is dated Mar 15 (3 days ago)

Code: Select all

5:09 PM how should open9x be named, that's my problem
  BTW your change is perfect
 me: openFRT
 Songis: only reflexion ...
 me: But is not right...
Songis: yes, openFRT is a good name, not too beautiful FRT
 me: opentx ??
 Songis: but ...
5:10 PM yes I think to something like that
  openRadio
  openTx
me: but... openrc is already a project...
  openradio...i don't like...
5:11 PM Songis: openTx is fine
  I do agree
me: opentx anyway is already used too
Songis: And graphically it is ok
  ahrrr
 me: http://www.opentx.de/
Now look to http://code.google.com/p/opentx/source/detail?r=1 and see the date....

Believe me or not, it's just by chance that we and Rob called two different things in the same way.
Probably the need for change was caused by the announcement of the FrSky TX name the same day.
That TX was breaking the 9X naming schema..

Maybe this would be better in another thread, but...
Personally I'd re-rename the forum to something like openradioforums.com. Keep openTX for the firmware, and everybody should be happy. It even suits the forum's intentions even better IMO.

Well, at the end of the day, no matter what others might say, is gonna happen anyway because it is already decided..
So, I showed my indignation about it and won't say another word on this subject.. I hope Mike decides to carry on developing er9x and hopefully port it to the frsky radios cos otherwise I won't be buying one.. My 9x's do a good job and never let me down till now so it's not that I REALLY need another radio..

Why?

er9x suppors the 9x radio?
ersky9x supports the sky9x board?

They are completely different firmwares. Similar.. but very different. The same issue will occur when/if mike ports er9x/sky9x to the frsky radios.

is it er9x? of course not. It uses a completely different source try. Maybe it could have been erX9D. That has a nice sound. But erTARANIS. To me.... just does not work.

Kilrah. I agree with you on timing.

I sat with the Taranis vs x9d name floating around all day. And then made a rather quick and impulsive decision to go with opentxforums.com A name I have had floating around for a while - but just never commited too.

From my side the change went like this:

Rob -> Sent email to bertrand asking about future options regarding the firmware name as the new radio was done.
Rob -> Made my decision to change forum name and started changing.
Bertrand -> Replies to me with name.. following by a google chat. What are you doing? (as the names changed)

Pretty much random - but a result of us coming to the same conclusions on how the market was changing - as a result of the frsky radio!

Anyway... lets not all get caught up in firmware wars. There is no war!

As said previously.. the market is changing. We should adapt.

I dont personally have an issue with this. My choice of opentx was to keep the name as short as possible.

+1. For short! Even openTX is a little long, but livable. Opentxmanager just doesn't roll off the tounge or fingers.
