What battery voltage is safe?

Programming your 9x using the stock firmware that comes with the radio. (Note. This is for the th9x, not the X9R)

What battery voltage is safe?

Post by romandesign »

I'm on stock firmware and stock AA battery holder. LCD shows 11.1V on fresh batteries. Is it normal? Will it beep or warn me when batteries become low? What's the safe operational voltage and when should I replace my batteries?

Thanks.

the stock T9X batt warning is preset around 8.9 volt. My understanding is the Tx only needs about 6V to operate. anything higher is converted to heat. You can use up to a 3S lipo (not recommended) and be fine. use a 2S lipo or a 3S LiFE would be better. for stock FW, you can't adjust the warning voltage so the 3S Life would be best. 2S lipo when warning voltage shows up you may ruin your lipo.

Thanks, but I guess I wasn't clear enough: I want to run on AA. I'm just asking when I should replace them with new ones, at what voltage indication. I'm not interested to switch to lipo yet. So are you saying stock warning is high enough that I won't have to worry about loss of contact or diminished range until I hear this warning?

Yep, for 8xAA the warning is perfect (that's what it's made for after all)

I was running on rechargeable AA too. But soon found out it is a pain to use them. have to recharge frequently. and if not using it for a while they loose charge. unless you get some newer rechargeable AA which retains charge for a long time , then it gets expensive. the 1500 mah LiFe from HK is only 6+ dollars. I love them. one of my stock 9X was sitting there for 6 month one time still almost fully charged. ;)
Still have 4 sets of NiMH batt sitting there with 2 charger by Energizer. (cost wise it would have been a lot cheaper and by far better than NiMH had I used LiFE to start with)
the stock voltage warning is good for the 3S LiFe too.

I'm just using AAs from Costco - I don't fly much, and around $12 for 48 AAs (I think) is not bad either :-) But you made a good point, I'll consider LiFe.

I like the eneloop batteries. They hold a charge for a long time, but don't have charging requirements that involve removing the battery to get to the balance tap.

I just plug the rx into my power lab with a pigtail and hit go.

I actually ordered this LiFe and a charger yesterday, so I will switch to it as soon as it comes. You guys convinced me. Doesn't cost much more than using AAs, and I needed charger anyway because all I have was small Art-Tech charger that came with my Mustang, which is called "balance charger" but has only one knob and one LED and one of my batteries already became unbalanced. And it of course has no discharge or storage charge functions.
