Questions about Mixing channels

Hello again
I'm working on a hydraulic steering project for my monster truck.
I have a problem tho, it's steering perfectly but it doesn't self center.
So i was thinking to hook up a potentiometer to the steering rod on my axle and onto the receiver, let's say CH4. This as a position sensor, like on a servo. Or even i could mod a servo, unsolder the motor and use it's circuit as a position sensor.
The pump on another channel, let's say CH3.
First of all is it possible to hook up a potentiometer directly on the receiver ?
Second if the answer is yes could i mix 2 channels like this ?
Sorry for these noob questions but i never had any electric model and i just started experiment with ESCs (needed for the pump)
