1/10 size RC Truck
3D Printed eSun PLA+ Yellow Wheel Rims
These wheels look really good !
Will hard-test to see how they hold up.
Note: This truck broke two sets of factory rims.

Re: 3D Printed RC Truck Wheel Rims (CR10 3D Printer)
Hard-testing results using PLA filament.
Test area was a large rough field with plenty of room to run full throttle.
First, I ran back and forth straight 10 times
and then checked the wheel, which looked good.
Second test part,
I added turning at high speeds which causes more stress to the wheels.
On my third high speed run with the truck landing as it was turning
three of the PLA yellow wheel broke off going in different directions.
I wish I had a picture to show you, because it looked like a spectacular
explosion
as three of the wheels flew off.
With all the high speed action coming to a spectacular stop,
next what is known in the RC Hobby
"THE WALK OF SHAME",
I walked across the large rough field to survey and retrieve the test results.
PLA is a strong plastic, but brittle, so must have been an accumulation of fracturing before total failure.
I want to try and making the wheels with ABS filament.
I have not printed with ABS yet, so I need to print some smaller items first
so that I have printer setting in place for before printing them with ABS.
Note: these photos are not taken at the large rough test field.

Re: 3D Printed RC Truck Wheel Rims (CR10 3D Printer)
Instead of trying different materials, I would suggest to modify the rims. They seem very thin and fragile where they broke. Also if there are sharp edges without proper radius, this will enforce trouble.

Re: 3D Printed RC Truck Wheel Rims (CR10 3D Printer)
Hi LutzB,
Thank you for your suggestions, they are very well thought out suggestions.
As you observed, the length of the wheel spindle is designed on the shot side
(wish it was longer) causing the thickness of the rim mount material to be very thin.
Yes, that is an option to change the design of the wheel rim
and maybe modify some of the RedCat's parts too and so to be able to have
a thicker rim web which would increase the strength of this very weak area.
For now I am taking some time to 3D think about several options,
weighing out the +'s and -'s of each.
There are some other ideas that I am also considering
which may have more +'s to them.
Thank you for your reply.

PETG might be a good filament to try. It has very good layer to layer bonding and it less brittle than PLA. That and increase the hub diameter a bit.

Hi pmullen503,
Yes, PETG filament is an option to consider trying too.
I have only printed with PLA filament so far
which is the easiest to 3D print with.
I do have some ABS filament and I am considering to try this also.
The tires are glued to the rims,
so I am looking at how to un-glue them.
Thank you

ABS is a pain and most people avoid it now, PETG is much easier and replaces ABS for most uses. PETG would be good for this indeed, PLA there was for sure no chance it would last.

Hi Kilrah,
I have 3 new rolls of Black eSun ABS which two of them I ordered from Amazon by my own error, I wanted the PLA+.
I have purchased the Simplify 3D slicer program which so far I like better then Cura which is a good slicer program.
Thank you and pmullen503 for your inputs.in whitch I should consider using the PETG filament.
Here is an eSun Filament Chart and some eSun general info about the different characteristics of each eSun's filament.

Re: 3D Printed RC Truck Wheel Rims (CR10 3D Printer)
As Kilrah wrote: do not waste your time with ABS. You will probably need an enclosure for this. PETG is almost as easy to print as PLA. You will probably get more stringing, but this can easily be removed afterwards. And depending on your printbed you will need a separator like a glue stick to avoid too much adhesion. Otherwise you might damage the bed. This never happened to me (MK3 with standard PEI sheet) but you can read a lot of people with this kind of problem.

Hi LutzB,
Which PETG filament do you recommend I purchase ?
The eSun yellow PETG cost more (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PQD7NJ2/?c ... _lig_dp_it).
and I see Amazon is selling there own band of filament too, "AmazonBasics" (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07H9GMYXS/?c ... _lig_dp_it).
Also been looking at "NOVAMAKER" (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0746 ... GFOF&psc=1),
which I think I like it's color of yellow better then the AmazonBasics yellow.
I do have an enclosure now also, so am able to print ABS properly.

Re: 3D Printed RC Truck Wheel Rims (CR10 3D Printer)
I tried the Amazon basics in transparent blue and got good prints out of it. Before I only had PETG directly from Prusa. More important than the color is a good and constant quality like diameter tolerance. Both brands were used with Slic3r PE and stock profile for my MK3.

Re: 3D Printed RC Truck Wheel Rims (CR10 3D Printer)
Update: I got some 4mm nut-washer nuts.
These nuts do not have the locking nylon insert and I will use the
Permatex Threadlocker Blue in it's place to lock this new nut-washer nut.
As you can see from the photo's, changing to this nut-washer combo
I can have a the thicker the drive-web in the rim.
And if I take another 1mm off from each of the Blue-Hex-Drive-Hub's
the rim drive-web thickness can be even thicker.
I am still working on getting the eSun ABS filament to print properly (better).
Part of the learning process as I am learning a new 3D slicer program at the same time.

Re: 3D Printed RC Truck Wheel Rims (CR10 3D Printer)
From an engineers point of view, you should not shrink the blue-hex-drive-hubs. You have to transmit a certain torque to the rim and the closer the contact point is placed to the center, the more force is generated. So I would try to enlarge the hub to the outside as you cannot enlarge the blue nuts.
[EDIT]
If you can send me the model I can try to modify it for you.

Re: 3D Printed RC Truck Wheel Rims (CR10 3D Printer)
Hi LutzB,
Thank you for the info and offer to help modify the rim design.
I have it in the form of an STL file.
I will keep you in mind for possible design help.
An engineer, who designed this RC wheel rim has been working with me.
And I feel I need to allow some time for his reply and help for now.
1mm is only .039 inches which is a very small amount.
Because I upgraded to the Aluminum Blue-Hex-Drive-Hub's, which are wider then the
original black plastic drive-hub's that did not hold up at all (many factory rim's broke).
The spindle length that the rim assembles go on,
is what is limiting what the rim's drive-web thickness can be.
The rim's drive-web thickness is where the weakest area of the rim is.
So I believe the best fix is done by increasing this weak area. When you are viewing the pic of the Aluminum Blue-Hex-Drive-Hub,
there is a very large chamfer that reduces the hex to hex drive area.
So by machining off 1mm (chamfer side) this will help to increase
the hex to hex drive area.
Scale size of this RC truck is 1/10

New upgrades help a lot when printing PETG filament.
1) TH3D EZBoard Lite V1.2 Control Board
https://www.th3dstudio.com/product/ezboard-lite/
2) TH3D Tough V6 Hotend Direct Drive Heatsink Extruder (E3D Titan Aero)
https://www.th3dstudio.com/product/th3d ... d-package/
I am printing the first rim (rim-design-fb3) that Madushan created as it has a thicker hub.
I also ran this STL file through the Netfabb Online Service which may have
fixed some troubles. https://service.netfabb.com/login.php?f ... mDH5ATEo8Y
After finished printing the rim-design-fb3, it looks and feels very strong.

Did the Hard-Test to see how the new 3D printed PETG filament Rims would hold up.
The results turns out really great, I like them a lot, very happy with them.
I believe they are much stronger then the stock rims, as they all broke.

3D Printed 4 more RC rims using Yellow eSun PETG.
Other needed items
Tires: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DU ... UTF8&psc=1
Tire-Glue: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B018M ... UTF8&psc=1
After assembling and gluing the tires to the new 3D rims and installing them on a Redcat BLACKOUT- XTE.
The new look with these yellow rims on the red and black body shell go very good together.
Hard testing performance was improved with less rollovers when making sharp turns at higher speeds.
Testing area was on an uneven mowed lawn, thickly grassed to very lightly grassed area which was flat and up to 60 degrees side hill.
Very happy with these 3D printed rims which are a lot tougher then the stock rims.

Re: 3D Printed RC Truck Wheel Rims (CR10 3D Printer)
3D Printed 4 more rims (PETG filament) to mount smaller tires on.
The tires that I have on the Redcat Volcano EPX-Pro are oversize tires,
which gears it up and does go much faster. The over size wheel do look really great.
But is causing trouble when first staring up to move
until the brushless motor gets enough RPM's up
then it takes off with great acceleration and power.
The 4 smaller wheels See the difference in size.
So making 3D printed proper size wheels,
I hope will help with the starting up from a dead stop.
Did a test drive and the Volcano still seem much faster then the Redcat Blackout.
It is lower to the ground and does not flip over as easily.
Has more power when first starting up.
But still has some difficulty staring up from a dead stop,
but is much better then it was.
The smaller wheels do not look as cool, but does improve the performance in better control when driving.

until the brushless motor gets enough RPM's up
then it takes off with great acceleration and power.

Wheel Drive Size, Hex Dia: 0.470 inches / 12mm
Axle Through Hole Dia: 0.150 inches / 4mm
It is better to 3D Print these rims with PETG filament.
Here is the 3D STL file for this RC rim,
you can download the Zip file below:
Please only download this STL wheel file for your personal use only.
Thank you and have fun with them.
