HobbyKing now offers 9x mainboards and LCDs as spare parts!
Re: HobbyKing now offers 9x mainboards and LCDs as spare par
The voltage spikes that are caused by the bad design are exactly the kind of things that cause unpredictable behavior based on component tolerances. A cap that has a capacitance at the lower end of the usual +/-20% tolerance can cause a larger spike than one that's on the top end of it, a production batch of microcontrollers might be more sensitive to that kind of misuse than another etc...

So, I was lucky with all my radios then not bad

Safety, the lost of control of your model, liability responsibly, crash repairs and/or model fly away lost,
probable high dollar lost, possible component tolerances failing,
are some of the justifications to do mod fixes.
Having Reliability in your 9x Radio is worth a lot and
mod fixes is a vary-good thing to do to increase your 9x Radio's Reliability.
My two cents.

I have all the mods on my radio, except that one and I could easily do it too.. I won't do it unless I see it happen. As I said I tried hard to make it happen and it doesn't. I do the test on all my radios
And if I see it happen I will go after the cause apart from the one we already know, that is, a design flaw..

You must be doing something wrong, or simply not trying hard enough!jhsa wrote:As I said I tried hard to make it happen and it doesn't.
Maybe your trims already have the fix? Maybe you did it and forgot about it?
Re: HobbyKing now offers 9x mainboards and LCDs as spare par
Nope.. I didn't do it, not even sleeping
Maybe if I reverse the battery while operating the trims I can make it fail??..
I know the m128 that was on my radio that now has the m2561, survived a voltage of nearly 10V for a over a minute when the AMS1117 (I think) regulator went south and let battery voltage pass to the output.
By the way, this is what happens to this regulator if you short the output as they have no protection, so be careful when using it.. At the end I opted for another regulator..
I only found out when the screen started to go blank and the radio locking up and rebooting.. Ended up with a bit of a brain damage that was cured with a reflash.. Amazingly all was working afterwards..

Re: HobbyKing now offers 9x mainboards and LCDs as spare par
Anyone who has received one of these boards, please confirm whether the processor fitted is a '128 or a '128A.
The original board has a '64A on it. In passing, the '128 takes twice as much current as the '64A or '128A (40mA instead of 20mA).

Both needing a new atmega chip. If you have a good soldering iron it's repairableandrewju wrote:How broken are they? The boards are actually repairable (in most cases).
Re: HobbyKing now offers 9x mainboards and LCDs as spare par
In this case it should be possible to find some local repair shop that can change the chip for you.
I'd do it myself, but I guess the shipping alone will cost more than the boards themselves...

Re: HobbyKing now offers 9x mainboards and LCDs as spare par
Yeah exactly and the quote from the local repair shop was the price of 3 new boards. I should definitely invest in a micro soldering station.
Re: HobbyKing now offers 9x mainboards and LCDs as spare par
They are Atmel GA128A, 1107.MikeB wrote:Anyone who has received one of these boards, please confirm whether the processor fitted is a '128 or a '128A.

I just got mine today and the chip is 128A. Confirmed!MikeB wrote:For the '128 chip, it is worth knowing whether the chip is actually a 128 or a 128A, and whether reboots happen. The '128A is a lower current (about half) version of the '128.

Now i have to find a skillfull guy to replace them all with the 2561 chip. And i assume that the ATMEGA2561-16AU is ok?
Any volunteer within the EU?

I can do it for you, if you don't mind paying for shipping to Russia and back...
(Though, it's certainly not within EU...)

For me no problem, for that weight, shipping is cheap to Russia. Im just waiting for for the 5 2561 chip package to arrive from China, then we can arrange things. I have 4 boards to replace the chip.

Re: HobbyKing now offers 9x mainboards and LCDs as spare par
I received my spare board today.
It has the 128A cpu.
I compared the board layout against the pictures I had taken from one of my old radios
The only differences I found, besides the missing mounting hole, there is a small piece of printed ground track at the active menu button pins that has been removed.
While the old board was marked as version 14, the new one is v15 with a date stamp of 20150108
And now all the components are named with white print

Re: HobbyKing now offers 9x mainboards and LCDs as spare par
If they were smart enough and as they have redesigned the board they could at least have placed soldering pads on the unused pins. Obviously they seem to be not that clever unfortunately. They know exactly that the 9x is a great radio to be modded and they know that thousands of people did it. And more would have done it if it was easier. Having pads on unused pins would have been a great help. How stupid was that?
