Broken tx aerial

Post by timrowledge »

I managed to break the aerial on my taranis. So far as I can work out it simply snapped the coax/wire when the plastic cover got separated from the mount in transit. It's not like it's a well made component...

Sure, I can order a replacement and I can find a friend with better soldering skills than mine to help but before doing that I'd like to know if there is a better quality aerial I might buy. I should add that I'm in the process of making a completely new case for (something a bit more like my old MPX p4000 case) and I imagine I would likely need a new aerial anyway. Suggestions please?

If the soldering skills are available, I'd get one of these,RF coax assembly or, similar, cut ufl connector off, and, solder in place. Shapeways has an adaptor for the case that is very nice.

Well, first one has to wait for it to actually appear for sale. And it isn't quite what I want - and I like to make stuff anyway.

OK, so you get that part, solder to the main board, make adaptor to suit case and then use what actual aerial? Would the http://www.alofthobbies.com/2db-module-antenna.html be the proper one? Forgive me asking probably dumb questions but RF stuff is not my area of expertise...

You did notice the "details" in your antenna you linked, right?

This is the stock FrSKY module antenna. If you damaged your stock unit, this is the replacement.
Note: Does not fit the Taranis.

I think that would be why the adaptor was mentioned. Yes, I could obviously get a straight replacement just as I mentioned in my original message but if something a bit tougher is available I'd like that. At least an adaptor and a screw on aerial would make it easy to replace again in the future.

Good luck on getting it repaired. I'm sure you will get it up and going shortly.

Tim, Yes, that antenna should work fine. The adaptor goes in the case to hold the SMA,(big end that screws into antenna), part of the coax assembly. Some more reading for you here

Mark and the guys @ Bolt RC have done a lot of work and testing, originally they soldered a ufl connector to the board, but found it better to directly solder the coax to the board.
Hope this helps, Greg...

Thanks- I've ordered the parts and we'll see how it goes.

I'm still interested to know about better quality aerial units though; not higher gain but simply mechanically better made. The original broke so very easily.
