9xr and futaba as slave

I am trying to set up 9xr as master and futaba 9c as slave. I am using a futaba to futaba cable but when I turn on the 9xr the futaba doesn't turn on as slave. and even if I turn it on I don't seem to get any signal on the trainer screen in the 9xr. I am using opentx, is there something I need to do beside setting the inputs on the trainer screen, How do I setup the trn switch to be active, Not sure how to do that.
