Question re instant trim function
Question re instant trim function
I have tried the instant trim function and find it really useful, but I am wondering which is the best switch to use.
I understand you need a momentary switch, but the only one is the trainer switch?
If I am tying to fly a badly out of trim model on the right stick with my right hand, and the trainer switch being also on the right, it's really awkward.
Wondering how others have done this?
Thanks

Re: Question re instant trim function
yep.. many radios have the trainer switch on the right side.. that's good for mode 1 but not for mode 2.. I'm thinking about adding a push button to the back of both my 9x's.. then I won't have to let go of any of the sticks to activate the switch..

Re: Question re instant trim function
If I remember correctly the trim is only changed when the switch it turned on. So you don't need a momentary switch. So you can use the THR switch instead if you like. I just simulated this through companion, and it works like I said. Trim changes when the switch is turned on, insta trim is not reactivated until the switch is turned off, and then back on again.

Re: Question re instant trim function
I think you can assign the auto trim to a left side toggle. Flip it and leave it flipped until you land.
Same for the trainer switch. Reassign it to a left hand switch. Not spring loaded but if the plane is playing lawn dart it's still going to let you take control. I agree that this right side trainer sw is not the best for mode 2 flyers. Being a pinch flyer and not using a tray frees up the 2&3 fingers on my right hand to actually hold the trainer sw and use the right hand stick at the same time.
A soft pushbutton in the left side would be nice to have however.
Opentx,
I wonder on the Taranis if the left wing slider pot could be used to trigger the trainer mode on or off when set to either pot end?
Easy on the finger and easy to move from end to end?
I hate drilling holes in my cases.

Re: Question re instant trim function
Showmaster,
You do have custom switches that you could set to activate above or below a point on the slider. Then just use the custom switch in the trainer menu.

Re: Question re instant trim function
Good to know! I'll give it a try. I've been focusing on using all my radios as masters and trainers to familiarize myself with the different FW versions.gohsthb wrote:Showmaster,

I hope to do more training at my local field when it cools off. I give up on trying to teach using all the low end planes and radio systems that are popular for new pilots. No more trying to fly one tx when the plane is in a dive and the pilot has a death grip on the case.
That or underpowered planes with only one flight battery and a plugin charger and no AC along with dead tx AA batteries.
I'm always asked " do I think there's enough tx battery for one flight?". My answer is yes, one take off, but maybe not one intact landing. Shame on me.
I'll report back my slider success.
Thanks
I've become a control freak I guess but it's worth it.
Re: Question re instant trim function
Hi all.
I've activated this fonction on my Taranis.
But, i have a light centering issue on my gimbals.
It seems that the centering issue is affecting the instant trim.
Except changing the gimbals, is there another option?

Re: Question re instant trim function
Best option is sort the gimbals.
You can try this 'fix'
On the stick outputs screen. Add a curve to the sticks.
A 5 point curve. Essentially a straight line, from bottom left to top right.
But put in a small dog leg to flatten it in the middle.
That should effectively mask the centering issue.

Hi Rob.
After having begibnning trying to implement your solution, i must say that i am not sure to understand this :
"But put in a small dog leg to flatten in the middle".
Could you please show me with a screen copy on companion9x?
Thanks in advance.
Laurent

Re: Question re instant trim function
Hello
Check this screengrab.
Pay attention too:
- 5 point custom curve.
The curve essentially 'flattens' the center of the stick to a value of 0.
So a stick variase of -3 to +3 will always return 0
If you assign the curve to the 'stick' then you solve the center issue

Re: Question re instant trim function
Fine. Thanks for the help.
I'll test that this evening.
By the way, on companion, on the same plane program, i still have an issue while activating the function, but only on ailerons this time.

Re: Question re instant trim function
Thanks Rob.
It's now working fine
Due to the little centering issue, i've reduced the "dogleg" value to +2% ans -2%.
The issue i had on companion was due to a wrong curve setting left only on aileron stick. So there is no need now to copy my eeprom
