Burning Flash on Windows [Finally SOLVED}

Post by rdeanchurch »

The directions in the manual do not mention anything about dfu.

After going thru the directions, then trying to read Flash on a new tx, I get a message

"DFU Util executable not found"

Trying to write 2588 gets me to the same message.

Did I miss a step somewhere?

TIA

Grab the file here:

http://openrcforums.com/taranis/

Copy df-util to suitable folder.

Configure companion burn press to the correct location for of util.

Where is this df-util stuff coming from? I just finished reading the wiki (again) and it has instructions for downloading the Zadig utility which I did successfully. It then instructs to select STM32 BOOTLOADER and install that driver. Well, STM32 BOOTLOADER does not appear as an option even though LIST ALL DEVICES is ticked. Grrr!

What does this have to do with df-util which is not mentioned in the wiki, the Taranis Operating Manual, or any other document I can find?

My OS is Win XP 32.

dfu-util is kind of the equivalent to avrdude for the chip that is in the Taranis. A copy is placed in companion9x folder when you install c9x, so it's supposed to just work.
If not make sure you have openTx for Taranis selected, and check in Burn->Configure that the location is correctly set (default path is C:\Program Files (x86)\companion9x\dfu-util.exe )

OK, I do have openTx for Taranis selected, and the path is as you show except the (x86) part which is not appropriate for my directory. Does this mean I don't have to get the STM32 BOOTLOADER working with the Zadig utility, and do I even need the Zadig utility? If not, reference to it in the wiki needs to be deleted.

Thanx,

Ted

Me Too.

I just uninstalled C9x 1.33 and reinstalled it.
Taranis is my preference.

Burn config shows DFU_UTIL path as
C:/Program Files/Companion/companion9x/dfu-util.exe
Windows Vista SP2 a 32 bit macihine.

The error message is
dfu-util 0.6

On the Taranis, due to the different processor, you need to do things differently for the flash and the EEPROM.
For the EEPROM, power on the Tx, then plug the USB cable in.
For the flash, do NOT power on the Tx, just plug the USB cable in.

Mine was NOT powered on in the above error message, But I did that earlier, then went back and looked at Scotts video again and saw the error of my ways.

Did you install the driver using zaddig?

Yes, absolutely. I don't think I'ld be able to read EEPROM without it would I?
The driver is installed in Windows, right? Uninstalling c9x and re-installing it wouldn't affect the driver?

Absolutely no.. the eeprom is read without the driver, as we emulate a Mass Storage Device

To reinstall the driver (radio must be plugged in and powered off)
start zadig
show all
select STM32 BOOTLOADER
verify that winusb is selected
(install/reinstall driver)

Just tried to reinstall driver via zadig.

Can NOT get STM 32 BOOTLOADER in the device list.
Instead I see STM Device in DFU Mode.. There are 3 other devices listed but they are 'human interface' or chi.... Something.

I guess I'll delete all references to zadig on my disk, get it from where Rob pointed me to and start again with the install.

Does that sound reasonable or is there another suggestion?

PS. With the STM device in DFU mode, a read flash attempt produced a 64k bin file. Doesn't look legit to me as all downloaded from opentx files are 100k+. I notice the DFU files on the sd card are 64k from FrSky.

Ok
Take X.
I deleted all references to zadig, STM, and uninstalled c9x v1.34.
Reinstalled c9x and followed directions in Wiki.
.That is downloaded zadig for Vista.
Started Zadig with Tx plugged into a USB and turned off.
the Device List shows only:
...Camera Chiccony
and
...STM Device in DFU Mode

I'm at a loss as what to try next, Help Please

Can you take a screeenshot of the Zadig window when "stm device in DFU mode" is selected?

Is the device actually already installed?

Or... Try a different USB port?

Are you certain you have a working cable?

Select the "STM Device in DFU Mode" entry and press "replace driver" - and you're done.

Tried all USB ports on my laptop. It's the cable I've been using on my t9xSkyNorth tx. It reads and writes EEPROM, I think that is conclusive. Is it?

No it's not. EEPROM access doesn't require the driver.

Maybe rdeanchurch means it's conclusive that his USB port and cable are working in answer to Rob's question. Does not mean that the driver is /installed/configured/whatever properly though as you point out.

Ted has it. I was trying to say the USB port and cable should be good in answer to Rob.

Now just to try to figure out how to get an image here.

It replaces. In the above screen I first uninstalled the driver, and deleted zadig, and uninstalled c9x. Just for Rob I used a different USB port and a different cable. If I click replace, it installs the driver. But it always says STM device in Dfu Mode.

It takes a couple minutes to install.

Will start from scratch on my old xp win desktop. It takes half a day (well it seems that way) to boot.

 Let me say this about that.

At least I'm in business, can flash from my crappy, slow, obsolete desktop.
Suddenly my favorite machine.

I still like to get the laptop fixed. It's 3 or 4 years old and not the fastest thing, but it beats the old desktop.

......except for getting 2604 on Taranis.

I'm in a similar pickle, all I get is dfu util code 1 (did not finish properly). This is using windows vista, I have uninstalled and installed a number of times without any success. I'm too tired to heave the laptop out, any ideas?
