ERSKYTx (was ersky9x) Questions

erskyTx runs on many radios and upgrade boards
ersky9x was a port of er9x for use on the sky9x board.

ERSKY9x Questions

You should get done pics of the new board up here & some notes about it. We can then add it as a sticky!

Links and part numbers for the additional stuff, such as the alternate LCD and Bluetooth module etc. could be added to the sticky.

Looking at the changed LCD, I don't see a connector on the ribbon cable so I'm assuming the user would have to install one, and if so, which one?

The Lcd ribbon fits into a connector on the board....just like the stock one..

The module needs to be taken apart . The LCD glass is double sided taped into
LED backlight.

The Plastic frame is keeping the LCD from sitting up high enough in the Display window on the radio.

The Glass fits in place , like the old one. and LED backlight sits over top the LCD.
A few dabs of hot glue holds things in place.

The Bluetooth module comes from Sparkfun Electronics #RN-42

Hi Brent

Will the new board take a higher resolution or larger display? I was originally planning to put it in a JR10X that a friend gave me. The original Flysky display would have been too small to fit in the JR10X display hole. I have since given up on that project because the 10X was supposed to be dead for the last 10 years but I got it working again so gave it back to my friend. If I get another project like that it would be good to have the option of larger screens. Higher resolution probably requires changes to the firmware and larger display would increase power consumption.

There is a spot on the board for a 16 pin (0.05") ribbon cable.
This contains all the LCD signals , plus a extra chip select signal.
So you could tie into this and drive a larger LCD or two lcds.
There is also a I2C port , which could also tie into some LCD displays.
The Hardware can do this , but the software supports a 64 x128 LCD currently.

I looked at higher resolution displays ...But cost and availability and drop in fit become issues ....

SkyNorth Hey, great job congratulations. Looking at the diagrams encounter some common errors
committed to draw connections, for example in the coordinate file C-0 in ERSKY9x_B20.dsn is
better to change the connection on CROSS for T not to give rise to doubts about the "point
connection".
You can tell us what state of development is the software?
Congratulations again and sorry for my English

I've been writing code to test the board out, most of the hardware is now tested and working. Just started on packaging the hardware drives to make them easy to use. Once that is done, hopefuilly, er9x should port over fairly easily. For best performance, certain variables should be defined to be 32 bits long instead of 8 bits. I'm thinking that if we define a new type of NATIVE_INT or NATIVE_UINT, these could be set for either 8 or 32 bits depending on the processor, then a lot of the code could be kept common.

This might seem like a no brainer but does the board have reverse polarity protection? I was just changing my batt in mine today and that occured to me.

I think other things might get fried but is the board protected?

Also when I get back I'll post a pic of the ErSky 9X logo I came up with. I spent hours looking for the origanl font without success.

The new ErSky9X board running test code. Just a taster, lots more to do to have it running properly. Picture is a bit poor, not enough lighting, sorry. Picture is better, I turned a light on!

There is a 1N4002 diode as reverse polarity protection , and a 1/2 ohm resistor in the power line ... Resistor should smoke out
and open if there is a reverse polarity.

One worry is that some of these batteries , can deliver 100's of AMPs in a short circuit , This could vapourize the diode junction and open it , in most cases the
diode would short out, but if it opened it wont do much good.

We are currently doing a Beta run of 25 boards , there are a couple left ...price will be $85 + shipping.

I will write up a Spec sheet on the new board...

The module looks close...but I dont think it is pin compatible . I have provided a 4 pin header with 3.3V , ground , RXD3 , and TXD. so you can always solder the four wires to module , and plug into the header on the board . A couple of dabs of hot glue could hold it in place.

hi

in witch way the optrex display is better? pixel response time?

what about the 5v reg? they are LDO ? will the new board allow 2s lipos to run at less volts?

The new processor runs from 3.3V, so it is OK down to below 5.5V supply. I'm running the prototype from a bench PSU set to 6.5V, but I have turnd it down to 5.5V and it is still OK.

The Dropout on the Regulators is 1.4V max.
The 5V regulator is for the LED Backlight , to keep a constant brightness.
The rest of the board runs at 3.3V
The RF module will dictate the minimum supply voltage.

As Mike said the Board is quite happy at 6.5V , so you could get a full cycle out of a 2S lipo.

The LCD is the closest replacement that is available , and fits the radio.
The Stock Lcd is known to fail , and has very poor contrast. The Optrex LCD are Top
quality units, that can be made to fit .

would be wonderful to have also softer buttons in the boards, so the "click click" is not that hard and noisy :)

looks good, does the time response of this screen is better than in the stock radio?

i had a jr 3810, and the pixel response was superb compared with the 9x one. Lets just take a look for example when moving the stick in the graph menu of dual rates and expo, its so slow that almost looks an invisible move until you stop it. That kind of thing didn't happen to me in the JR LCD

what about the USB programing? i see the mini usb connector is not wired so the radio is going to need a drill for the usb connection?

thnks

The Bluetooth module needs to have a serial input/output , and must support SSP (simple serial protocol)

These graphic displays have a very fast data rate. It is most likely slow LCD updates, because of all the math being done with the EXpo functions.

Yes , to access the external connections , you will need to drill some holes.
The External connections are all designed to come out of the bottom of the unit, There are spots on the pcb for internal connectors.
The internal USB connection will fit the Smartie parts USB board.

To keep the price point of the board within reach , seperate connectors and wiring harness were avoided(but could be used)

The Board mounts inside the case, without having to drill holes for the external ports if not needed.

The board also could be programmed through the serial port. So only one hole would have to be drilled , to access the COM2 serial connector.

There is no perfect solution , but by putting the connectors on the board, you have to drill not solder ...and for some this is very good....
