EEPROM ERROR after trying to flash
EEPROM ERROR after trying to flash
Hi, all.
I installed the SmartiPants board and the latest USBasp driver, and all looks good.
I believe that I have the correct configuration, but received this error message.
The 9X screen shows "EEPROM ERROR" and gives a continuous tone
Can anyone help, please?
TIA - Chris

Did you turn the radio on when flashing?

Re: EEPROM ERROR after trying to flash
If you then press any button.. does it not 'format' the epprom?
This error is normal on the first ever flash of the custom firmware.

Thanks, folks, and greetings from Adelaide.
I tried to flash with the radio on and off, and got the same error message each time.

I tried it with radio turned off, and then on, and received the same error message.
I'm using Win 7 64 bit, and updated the driver for the SP board quite fine.
Ah, Guildford - my wife used to spend a FORTUNE there when we lived in Farnham!

Sorry, I forgot.
No button-pressing fixes it

Re: EEPROM ERROR after trying to flash
Target doesn't answer = Either the radio is not powered (you just checked that), or bad connection between the programmer and the radio. Remove the SP board, clean the pads carefully, reinstall it checking the pins are in place and touch firmly.
Re: EEPROM ERROR after trying to flash
Thanks, folks.
Pulled it all apart, and pins look good.
Will get some polyprop alcohol and clean everything.

Re: EEPROM ERROR after trying to flash
Make sure your 9x board is a v2 or you're sp board has been setup for a v1 board. Just mentioning the other common issue besides the dirty pads.
I did have one sp board the had the pogo pin fall off. Found it in the case and resoldered it, whew.

Re: EEPROM ERROR after trying to flash
Pulled apart again (glad I bought the nutsert kit!), cleaned everything with alcohol, checked the USB cable for continuity, and still get the same error about not being able to program it.
It's unusable with the EEPROM ERROR and the beep.
The SmariParts PCA shows v2.3 and the 9x was sold to me by HK as a V2 a couple of months ago.
Any more ideas before I drop an unused 9x into the bin?

Re: EEPROM ERROR after trying to flash
Ok check this picture and link to be sure you have a v2 board
http://www.smartieparts.com/shop/index. ... =page&id=8
Next check to see that your programmer driver is loaded and your computer sees it and its port #.
I'm not familiar with the latest sp board but all my older versions work well with eepe so I know it works.
In the past the USB connector sites could break off but I'm sure not anymore. I also think the radio power must be on now. Maybe not from your beeping comment.
Tell more about the beeping?
If the USB SP connection is providing the tx 5 volts and the firmware is still stock, the beeping is normal. The 9x thinks the tx battery is too low. That goes away with new FW.
Sorry to be redundant but if these tips fail you may have a defective SP board and Steve needs to look at it.
Don't give up, you've just hit a rough spot.

Re: EEPROM ERROR after trying to flash
Thanks,
It's V2.
The PC sees the driver - screenshot attached.
There was no beeping when I first connected everything, as the Eneloops are all full.
I tried flashing the firmware with the 9x turned off and on, with the same error messages.
The EEPROM ERROR message remains in the upper-left corner, and the tone is continuous.
BTW, I saw your profile, so you will understand that one of my transmitters is an IC-706MkIIG, and the mode is generally PSK31

Re: EEPROM ERROR after trying to flash
Better news about the 796 and psk31 right now. 756pro3 sitting here idle for that past few years since I got involved with RC again and er9x.
Just registered for the April DC convention in April.
I'm out of ideas on your programming right now. It may be time as I said to have Steve check it out?
That or a solder in programmer?
I have 2, year old SP boards in my parts box. I went to the solder in option since and liked the outcome and also went to sku9x boards.
Too bad you're not close by me.
If your computer sees the board and you've your program config correct things should work.
What program eepe or c9x, I may have missed that?
I see no port added to your screen shot.
I only have one SP board in operation and I'll try and program it to verify your settings.
I haven't used it in months so I'll have to refresh my brain. It programmed ok last time on my netbook XP so that should work first time.

Re: EEPROM ERROR after trying to flash
Yeah, I think the port has to be set to USB.

Re: EEPROM ERROR after trying to flash
From the first screen shot, the computer sees the programmer just fine. That part of the link is working, the problem is between the programmer and the 9. Try adding "-B 100" to the extra options in the programmer config.

Re: EEPROM ERROR after trying to flash
Sorted!
I programmed it while turning on and putting up with the ear-splitting tone, and it took!
Thanks to everyone for their advice - I would love to buy you all a beer to start off 2013 properly
Cheers,
Chris
