Safer Power Plug
The power plug on the 9x is an invitation for trouble. A brick waiting to happen. This mod is pretty simple even for those (like me) with modest soldering skills.
RE: Safer Power Plug
I think that the first mod to these radios, even before reprogramming, is fixing the battery.
I think most problems actually stem from bad connections and plugging in the battery in reverse.

BEWARE - WE ARE IN THE AIR!!!
What goes up... Should be controlled by a 9X!

Safer Power Plug
I normally leave the existing connection in place, then simply solder a servo lead to the power lines on the back board. Run the lead into the battery bay - job done!Scott Page wrote: The power plug on the 9x is an invitation for trouble. A brick waiting to happen. Re: Safer Power Plug
This is what I have done to mine. I used a jst connector. Of course I built my battery from 18650 cells so I could put whatever I wanted on it for the connector. For the people buying the LiFe batteries the servo connector is easy.

That's what I did too.. It works wellrob.thomson wrote: I normally leave the existing connection in place, then simply solder a servo lead to the power lines on the back board. Run the lead into the battery bay - job done!

Re: Safer Power Plug
I did mine this way to give balance charging with the batteries in place,
and fitted the programming socket where the charging socket was.
Had to isolate one ground pin on the pcb, used as 3.7v tap now

tell me where did you solder the balance wire (blue one) on the trustfire bat pack to allow for balance charging?
Re: Safer Power Plug
Soldered it to the far end, where the link between the two batteries is.

Re: Safer Power Plug
erm ... well I tried a deans once ... I have deemed it as a disaster waiting to happen ...I use mostly XT60's now, but for the TX a "servo" connector seems to be the safest for me personally. I did replace the original connector on one of my TX's with one of these that I liberated from the cable

Re: Safer Power Plug
I'm also using a servo connector on the battery. the other side is soldered to the board.
If I could I would also use the XT60 but is a bit too big for the battery compartment with 8 eneloops in there . I think they are one of the safest.. Not bad for a chinese product. they're really good and I use them in all my aircraft

Re: Safer Power Plug
The standard connector on my two er9x radios have 3 pins, ground-positive-ground (I checked the PCB). If somehow you manage to jam the connector in flipped 180 degrees, the polarity is still correct. What am I missing?
Thanks

I've wondered the same thing. Did earlier versions have a different plug?Ozzy wrote:The standard connector on my two er9x radios have 3 pins, ground-positive-ground (I checked the PCB). Re: Safer Power Plug
Same. To create problems you need to shift the plug, which you can't if you leave the original white plastic connector and use a battery with a servo plug.
I guess those who fry their radio used batteries with 2-pin connectors that could be shifted in the wrong position.

Re: Safer Power Plug
Yea I did away with my Deans connector and resoldered in a 2S HXT connector male and female...... a lot less cumbersome and worked a treat
Re: Safer Power Plug
I used one of these and had no problems.. Oh, it can be used to program the radio also

Re: Safer Power Plug
servo plug definitely. if you feel like you need better. go JST then. I prefer JST on nitro buggys. on the 9X a servo plug will do OK (perfectly IMO)
