Hi guys,
I have a near 2yo X9D+ running an iRangeX multi protocol module and a 3S Taranis compatible Tx Lipo. Never had a problem with it.
This morning the radio shut itself off when I selected a model at the field. I was concerned ... but it powered back on fine after toggling the power switch. It seemed fine so I flew something ... all good. Changed to another model .. in the air for a minute or two .. and it shutdown completely again. End of a well loved old EDF. Lipo reading 10.0V so no problem there. Bench testing at home .. won't repeat the failure.
WTF do I do .. Can't trust it with anything good obviously!
Cheers

Re: Taranis X9D Powered off mid flight
Did the radio just power off, or did it go through the normal shutting down sequence where it saves data to EEPROM?
Sounds like it could be a bad power switch.

Re: Taranis X9D Powered off mid flight
Mike, with soft power this should never happen even if the switch goes bad?
Remember I have designed a new Switch board for my 9x radios? This was the reason. My power switches can go bad any time they like, but unless they short to ground the radio will continue powered until the switch is moved..
It is absolutely terrible having this happening while flying

Re: Taranis X9D Powered off mid flight
Soft power helps IF the conditions are met i.e. they have a setup that provides telemetry and the option to keep on hasn't been disabled... we don't have enough info about the setup though
Re: Taranis X9D Powered off mid flight
What you mean, "the option to keep on"? Such an option should not exist, or am I missing something here?
The radio shouldn't turn off unless WE tell it to turn off. Nothing to do with telemetry.
As Mike said, this sounds a bit like a bad switch, and it seems that there isn't any safety circuitry to prevent the radio from turning off if the switch fails in flight. Just my guess of course, as I never saw the radio's schematics..
But this won't happen with my radios. Power switch fails, and the radio will still stay on until I move the switch to the off position.

Re: Taranis X9D Powered off mid flight
We could add a confirmation screen so that when you switch off, you have to confirm you want to power off (e.g. MENU/ENTER button) so the radio continues to function if the power switch does fail in flight.
I assume the OP is using openTx (they didn't say).

Re: Taranis X9D Powered off mid flight
No, I mean the switch fails like having a bad connection when it is ON. For a switch to fail the way you described it must be disintegrating completely
As I said, on my radios I have designed and built another power board with some failsafe circuit.

Re: Taranis X9D Powered off mid flight
This could probably add some extra safety, even to radios with a normal 9x type switch, which is the case of my radios.

Re: Taranis X9D Powered off mid flight
Yes, it would only be needed on radios with a direct on-off switch.
