ATmega2561 Upgrade to Turnigy 9X
Re: ATmega2561 Upgrade to Turnigy 9X
I need a little help with setting the fuses on the 2561. At the command prompt running avrdude I am getting a response of: A required privilege is not held by the client. I don't know what to do
Thanks
Mike
OK, figured that out by running as administrator. Now avrdude.exe error: could not find USB divice "USBasp with vid=0x16c0 pid=px5dc. I don't know what that means. Sorry about my ignorance.
Thanks
Mike

Here is the command and its response:
C:\Program Files (x86)\eePe>avrdude.exe -c usbasp -p m2561 -B 500 -u -U lfuse:w:
0xDE:m -U hfuse:w:0xD1:m -U efuse:w:0xFC:m -v

Do I somehow need to tell it to use the usb port?

Re: ATmega2561 Upgrade to Turnigy 9X
Thanks, with your help I got it to flash!! Now I am trying to get the display to work. I am going to follow Andrew's solution a few posts back.

Re: ATmega2561 Upgrade to Turnigy 9X
Andrew was right. The only way I could get the display to work was to manually download the er9x-2561 file, then flash with that. The one downloaded by eepe did not work. Thankyou all for your help

Re: ATmega2561 Upgrade to Turnigy 9X
This is such a great upgrade and turns out once one knows what to do and in which order it was very easy. I have the second Tx working. Even though I am a complete rookie, would it be worth documenting the next two Tx conversions with photos and write up a Wiki? Some of the details were hard to find (scattered). You guys brought most of it together in this thread. The fuses and the avrdude were the most confusing for the first timer

Re: ATmega2561 Upgrade to Turnigy 9X
I am wondering if the following is intended. Flashed with er9x2561. When I push either the left or right button, all switch, pot, or stick inputs fail to register on screen or pass control commands to the model. Seems like this May be unintended as if in flight this would cause loss of control.
By the way I am working on a Wiki for the 2561 upgrade.
Thank you
Mike

Re: ATmega2561 Upgrade to Turnigy 9X
This doesn't sound right. If you are on the main screen, seeing the bars, and you pres LEFT or RIGHT LONG, you switch away from that screen, so cannot see the bars to know if they are moving. How can you then tell the sticks are not then registering on the screen?

Re: ATmega2561 Upgrade to Turnigy 9X
This occurred first time with an accidental short press of "left". Fortunately I was not flying. After noticing, I duplicated it on the other two Tx that I moded. So if my clumsy thumbs were to short press the left or right buttons during flight..... A second press of either button restores normal function. Short pressing the up or down buttons results in expected response.

Re: ATmega2561 Upgrade to Turnigy 9X
Please specify which revision of firmware you are using.
Ahhhh, this is a feature, controls the the aircraft should still be OK though. Above the bars is a "scroll bar", a dotted line with one half solid. If the left half is solid, the display is for channels 1-8, if the right half is solid, the display is for channels 9-16. You use the left and right buttons to switch between them.

Hi Mike, I am going to order the m2561 for 2 of my other radios and just wanted to make sure I have the right one....
If you could help that would be greatly appreciated... or if anyone else knows the answer. Thanks.
8 or 16 MHz (Speed)
1.8~5.5v or 4.5~5.5V (Voltage Supply)

Re: ATmega2561 Upgrade to Turnigy 9X
You want the ATMEGA2561-16AU, i.e. 16MHz & 4.5-5.5V. Or that's what I used at least...

Re: ATmega2561 Upgrade to Turnigy 9X
Hello. I'm sorry for digging so deep I'm wondering about CPU upgrade and it's not clear to me if M64 -> ATmega2561 is one to one replacement or require any main board modifications?
Re: ATmega2561 Upgrade to Turnigy 9X
You can replace the m64 with the m2561 without any modifications. They are pin compatible. But while you are doing it, why not do also the telemetry mod??

Re: ATmega2561 Upgrade to Turnigy 9X
Thanks I don't have telemetry-supproting module yet. In other topic someone told me that stock AFHDS 2A module doesn't have it. I have to wait for funds to buy FrSky. Btw which FrSky system would You suggest? DJT or XJT?
What improvement 2561 gives over M128? I know that it have more RAM memory, but what does it mean practically?

Re: ATmega2561 Upgrade to Turnigy 9X
Well, I use mostly the DJT and DHT modules which are D8 protocol
I also use the multiprotocol module and some DIY Frsky D8 compatible receivers that I built, based on a project found on RCGroups..
The "X" Protocol (XJT) is more modern and it allows for some extra more complicated telemetry and sensor combination.
I personally like more the performance of the D8 stuff, so, if you don't require complicated telemetry configurations, the DJT will serve you well. Not sure if it is still legal to buy it in Europe
It has the double of the m128's RAM actually, meaning that can do more operations at the same time. What improvement 2561 gives over M128? I know that it have more RAM memory, but what does it mean practically?
I believe it has also an extra pin that we can use for 1 more extra switch
