Help with retract setup on x9d plus radio

Post by bonnicij »

Can someone please tell me how to setup 3 retracts. This is my first plane with retracts They work well on old 36mg radio, when I use the x9d they don't work together and front wheel retract does not work at all. Wing retracts sometimes 1 will come up other time both will come up or only 1 will go down. I have connected them with a y lead going to 5 channel.

hi Mike, I'm using channel 5, using the switch SC, switch up they retract, switch down they extend, for inputs I have source as SC, switch weight 100, switch set to SC↓ . Mixer is set to ch 5 I have mix name as gear. source set to SC switch set to SC↓ , for output I have subtrim set to minus -45.0 otherwise nothing happens. I think I just about covered everything. Thanks for your reply

Do not set the "switch". This is for disabling the whole mixer line when it is off.

Hi, Kilrah I tried what you said. Took off the switch from inputs then the switch from mixer then I tried putting one back on but, they still are not working together

It's the above bolded "switch" settings that have to be removed. The Input is useless in this case too since you don't refer to it in the mixer.

All you want is a line in the mixer with source SC, done.

You might need to reduce the Weight. We don't know how your retracts work, they may ignore signals outsode a certain range.

You might want to post a link to the retracts you bought so that we can at least try to find out how they work. Without knowing that we cannot help you. We don't know what the retracts need from the radio, do you know that?

There are several different retracts types that need different commands.

Or you could look at the channel monitor on the old radio, and see what the signal is for each of your gear switch positions. If you report that then it's easy to reproduce.

Hi,

You need to isolate the problem first.

Just replace your retracts by a servo with a horn and see what happens.
If a known good servo does not work, then you'll know the problem is not your retracts.
Go step by step, including changing wires if necessary.

Hi, Raythegreat I tried what you said still the same result. What I can't understand is when I hook them up to a 36mgz radio on everything works fine. They don't miss a beat

Hi bonnicij,

OK then we know it's not the retracts the problem.
Continue like this one piece at the time until you identify the culprit.
Go backwards from retracts to up the hill to the Tx, including cables, connections, grounds, V+ , receiver, etc etc.
Don't jump anything and you'll find it.

Looking at your link, it looks like those just need plain -100% to +100% to work. They seem to be servolless retracts.
Also, I have read a few reviews and there are a lot of people complaining that they just failed, sometimes even before the model flew for the first time.. :(

Does your 36MHz radio have a trainer connection. If so, you may be able to connect it as a student to the X9D, and then find out what the channel 5 output from it is.

I have just read your first post again. If they are all connected with a "Y" lead, they should all work the same.
If not, then there are 2 possibilities:
1 - One or more are damaged
2 - They are not receiving enough power.
My suggestion is to try to find out if any of them is damaged.
Connect only one at the time to the channel and see if all of them work this way.

But you also say that they work when connected to the other older receiver.
All togetther through the "Y" lead, or on their own?
It could be that the old receiver supplies more power somehow..

With a "Y" lead all of them receive the same signal, if one doesn't work the problem might not be the radio's programming.

Not only that, also try to connect the retracts one by one and see if they all work.

I have connected a 6v battery and the retract are working all together now 4 out 5 times, the other time I have to flick the switch up and down quickly a couple of times as the other 2 are extending to get the last retract to extend which is usually the nose wheel otherwise only 2 will extend together. As I said this doesn't happen all the time. Retracting is no problem they all retract together every time

Perhaps they are drawing to much current from the battery. Be carefull if powering them from the receiver, because if the voltage drops too much, the receiver might brown out and you will lose control of the model. Perhaps is a good idea having a separate battery for them.. Just my 2 cents
