Activating cell voltage measurement for/in OpenXSensor

Post by neo2001 »

I'm using an Arduino Pro Mini with a MS5611 IC and some voltage dividers connected to the A0-A3 pins on the Pro Mini.

The variometer function seems to work fine (Alt values rise and fall when moving the sensor) and I also successfully tested getting the ADC values from the A0-A3 pins with a simple Arduino sketch. So the hardware setup seems to be ok. Still, I don't get the "cells" or "cell" sensor in OpenTX (X9D+), like I get with the FrSky voltage sensor.

I've read the documentation and think I have done everything correctly, but still no success.

I only want the battery/cells voltage(s). But I only get VFAS (and RxBt) with a value of 0.00V (although, I've commented the first one out in the basic configuration).

I'm using a X8R receiver.

The PDF attached contains the resistor values I'm using (see page two for the measured values). I'm using the internal 1.1 V voltage reference value.

And these are my configuration files:

Any ideas what's going on here?

// For old version 2 and 3 of oXs, there was a program named "configurator" running on PC that allowed easier editing of a oXs_config.h file
// Still this configurator is not developped anymore. So this version request manual editing.

Re: Activating cell voltage measurement for/in OpenXSensor

Post by kalle123 »

Code: Select all

#define USE_INTERNAL_REFERENCE // uncomment this line if you use 1.1 volt internal reference instead of Vcc (voltage divider must be used to reduce voltages to 1.1 volt max)
You think, it is wise to measure voltages up to 4.25V with the 1.1V ref set on Arduino analog ports A0 - A3?

Do you think, those AD ports survived this abuse?

PS. ... and next time, please do not post the full text of those config files in your posting directly, just attach to your post ;)

Re: Activating cell voltage measurement for/in OpenXSensor

Post by neo2001 »

Sorry for posting the full config files, I should have attached them!

And of course I'm using voltage dividers to bring the voltage down to a range between 0 and 1.1 Volts. As I've described above, this works fine and doesn't seem to be the issue. The problem is, that I can't get the firmware to display the measured voltages and/or show the "cells" sensor entry.

Re: Activating cell voltage measurement for/in OpenXSensor

Post by kalle123 »

Sorry, my fault.

The manual says
**** 2.1 FrSKY protocol (SPORT and HUB ) ************************************************************************************
* Measurements being automatically transmitted are :
* - Relative altitude(cm), main vertical Speed(cm/sec) (when at least first baro sensor is present)
* - Cell voltages (when NUMBER_OF_CELLS > 0)
Did you rescan the sensors on the radio?

Another guess, could you try to make the voltage divider settings a bit more like that.
VOLT1 VOLT2 VOLT3 VOLT4 VOLT5 VOLT6
#define ARDUINO_MEASURES_VOLTAGES YES
#define PIN_VOLTAGE 2 , 0 , 2 , 3 , 8 , 8
#define RESISTOR_TO_GROUND 12 , 20 , 30 , 40 , 50 , 60 // set value to 0 when no divider is used for one of this voltage
#define RESISTOR_TO_VOLTAGE 50, 100.1 , 200, 300 , 500 , 600 // set value to 0 when no divider is used for one of this voltage
#define OFFSET_VOLTAGE 0 , 0 , 0 , 0 , 0 , 0 // can be negative, must be integer
#define SCALE_VOLTAGE 1 , 1 , 1 , 1 , 1 , 1 // can be negative, can have decimals
setting the resistor values in kohms with and setting the two last lines as active.

Just a try.

Re: Activating cell voltage measurement for/in OpenXSensor

Post by neo2001 »

Yes, I have searched for new sensors every time I tried new settings. I also tried deleting all first.

I will test another receiver, since that's something I tried not, yet.

The offset and scale lines were active and set to 0 and 1, respectively. I only commented them out later, after reading that they aren't mandatory, in the description.

I also tried setting resistance values in kiloohms first and then in ohms. As far as I understand, it doesn't really matter, as long as the ratio stays the same.

I'm using the latest Arduino IDE and OpenTX version. Firmwares of the receiver is also up to date.

Loaded the two config files from your first post.

Inserted those here, flashed the code to an Arduino uno, activated 'debug' and that is, what I see

That looks ok.

Thank you for testing it! I didn't know about the debug function, will enable that too and check out if I get the same info or not.

Re: Activating cell voltage measurement for/in OpenXSensor

Post by neo2001 »

I'm an idiot! :) Everything is working fine now, the error was mine. I had two different directories of openXsensor and the one I was editing wasn't the one I was compiling and flashing to the board. The vario worked, since it was the default setting anyway. But as soon as I saw the debug output, I knew what was going on.

Sorry for wasting your time! But also thank you, since it helped to find the issue, so not completely wasted... :)

Good to hear, it is OK now ;)

I tested cell voltage years ago, but never used it in real.

https://openrcforums.com/forum/viewtopi ... 603#p91691

Total voltage is sufficient for me.

To be honest, total voltage is enough for me too. Usually no one uses batteries, if their cell voltages are significantly off, so that they need to be monitored. But since openXsensor supports it, I wanted to try/use it and it works very nicely. This way I have basically combined the functionality of the FrSky Voltage and Vario Module in one device.

Hi. This here shows a bit of my 'standard' oXs.
IMG_20210116_193421.jpg
(112.59 KiB) Not downloaded yet
RX, oXs with MS5611 and an ACS712-20A current sensor., placed between battery and controller. There is a distance between current sensor and oXs, so I can place the oXs with the baro in a more 'quieter' place. There are 4 wires between oXs and ACS712, so I am sending the battery voltage to the pro mini too.
That way I have baro, voltage and current and with voltage and current I have consumption and battery %.
