openTx Vs er9x, is any of the two better?

Post by nougiw »

Hi! I have just received my 9XR and I'm thinking on upgrading to one of the two. Let the experts give us some pros and cons to see if we can prove one of the two being better than the other. Let me start with a simple question: which one is closer to the stock FW of 9XR?

There is not such thing as the stock FW of the 9XR..
The 9XR comes with er9x.. A very old version though

Yes this could be a possible solution but I actually intend this to become something like a mini guide for anyone new to the hobby, who'd like to obtain a small idea of what each firmware is capable of and what not, similarities and differences, pros and cons. That's why I expect from you, the older and more experienced users, to start writing your personal opinion, your likes and dislikes. Especially the ones that are familiar with both firmwares and are able to do direct comparisons... ;P

There is no true way to say which is best.
They are similar... But different.

Different flavours. Each user finds they prefer a different firmware.

So all end user choice.

Then it sounds like you'd be wanting to load each of them and use them for a few weeks each, then make your guide out of your own observations!
Everybody here has already chosen one and is obviously biased ;)

I have a strong preference for openTX and I also know er9X. With the last mentioned, I found the mixer not very intuitive and it costs me days to program a full equipped glider. it frustrated me. After 3/4 of a year I swopped to openTX and started to re-program my glider. It all worked flawless. It exactly did what I expected what it should do while in er9x, I had all kind of work arounds for unexpected problems. Now I have telemetry FrSky and look with one eye to er9x what they do,.... anyway. I cannot go back since I still remember my headache with the mixer.

Much of the mixer is the same in both. What features of openTx are you using that er9x doesn't appear to have that needed workarounds?

It would be more helpful if you could detail what you feel isn't as good as it might be, rather than just say it is not good enough.

I was thinking of posting something along the lines of this original question. However now that someone's already done so, would this be the correct place to ask what the key differences are between OpenTX and the ER9X family? I started on ER9X (on a 9X), and swapped quite a long time ago to Open9x but I can't actually remember the reason for the change. Was Open9x first to support flight modes? Anyway for people trying to understand the differences between the two firmware families, could anyone give a quick summary of the functional differences?

Here you can find out how er9x is now:

It's the new manual.

Thanks, I'll have a read through that. As I say I can't remember why I switched from ER9X to Open9x in the first place. Where I'm at just now is that I'm wondering whether to go for the 9Xtreme upgrade (which I think is supported only by ER9X) or for the Taranis (supported by both?)

Interesting, I was just asking basically the same question in another thread. As a new person to the hobby and now with a 9x equipped with a 9xtreme board I think my small experience came via each pc interface. I cold burn with OpenTX and had a hard time getting eepe to do the burn. I believe I burnt the er9x hex file to the Transmitter. I guess my question is does it hurt to use the OpenTX interface with er9x? Or should I use a different PC based product or burn OpenTX to my Transmitter? It's confusing out there folks??

Turns out there's no choice for me, my hardware does not support the most recent OpenTX. So, it boils down to my interface issue. I can not get this avrdudue.exe to work at all on Windows 10 or 8?? Is there a download that includes this utility??

Again, read the answer Mike gave you in the other thread you posted in, and linked again above. eePe and avrdude do NOT have anything to do with your setup.

Again Mike I apologize... After a Search I found that the Avrdude software was in OpenTX and BLHeli that I had on my PC and must have been causing issues... I removed both and now all seems to be working fine with this issue... I'm now able to retrieve and save documents. Sorry for my confusion I believe now its time to read all 99 pages of your User Doc, Thanks for all your hard work on all this!

This again has absolutely nothing to do at all with your problem, which as he pointed was that you were using eePe instead of eepskye.

To add some more info:
MikeB wrote:You need eepskye, rather than eepe. These are installed together, in the same directory, but only eepe gets a desktop icon (a problem I hope will be fixed in the next release). Just go to the directory in which you installed eepe, and find eepskye.exe. Create a shortcut to this and then use it!
It is best if you go to http://www.er9x.com/ and download r419 of eepe/eepskye from there. Regardless of the version number this is the latest revision, I had a version number problem when moving from googlecode to Github!

Hi tshaw1,
See here and you will be able to find some good info about erSky9x
and how to use it: (viewtopic.php?f=95&t=7182).
Yes do update to the newest ersky9x firmware and use to the newest version of the PC eeprom editor eePSkye,
find them here: (http://www.er9x.com/) which goes with erSky9x.

Just watch the videos I linked above. They teach you how to download, install, and use eepskye.
