FTDI Drivers

Post by Bill »

According to Bruce Simpson in His Aardvark blog:
http://www.aardvark.co.nz/daily/2014/10 ... l#continue
New FTDI drivers have been made to erase the PID (product identification or product id) number of devices using cloned FTDI chips.
This could have serious consequences for those people using USB devices for programming their 9x's
It may also apply to the Taranis (which has an inbuilt USB) Bricking the interface, I am not familiar with the drivers used on the Taranis, but a lot of cloned USB programmers use FTDI drivers because they actually come with windows and its a convenient piece of bridging software.
So don't update your FTDI drivers if you have them.
Anyone who knows what the consequences will be please comment.
PS. What does the 9XR use?

Neither the 9x tools nor the Taranis use anything related to FTDI.

Sound files of Megasound9x board can be updated via FTDI USB to serial.

Just checked both my FTDI adapters.. Both work. My PC with win7 had a major update a few days ago, so I had to test.. ;)
How can I prevent this driver from being updated in the future?

Thanks

João, on the fake chips, the product ID is changed from 6001 to 0000.

You can change it back with the FT Prog tool.

Both my FTDI adapters here are genuine, so no problem with me. ;)

And then does it stay unchanged or will it reset the ID when connected again?

Thanks

As far as I understood, you have to use the previous drivers.
The updated drivers do reset this ID again.

Switching to an old driver in Windows is another challenge

Two weeks ago we had a problem with those fake FTDI chips here.

But as I don't have one of those "FTDI" adapters here, I can not verify. But it seems to work 8-)

Just got a 3DR Radio 433 MHz on my desk here from China.

No issue doing a short loop back test with that equipment under linux, but windows

One hour messing around with several "old" ftdi drivers.

This http://www.arexx.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=2619 finally did it.

Hey guys, this must be old news but it seems that FTDI could be out of business soon. You can buy now really cheap arduino boards that don't rely on the FTDI chip/drivers anymore. It seems that the chinese overcame that problem by producing another chip that uses other drivers. The CH340G. And it seems to work well. I bought a couple of these arduino nano boards that come with this TTL adapter chip

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-mini-USB-Nano ... 2a47b0e850

So no more fake chips scare anymore.. just get stuff with this new chip.. ;) :) and it is cheaper :D

The new arduino nano boards can actually be had for considerably less:
http://m.ebay.com/itm/371215911158
That price is only marginally higher than the price for the Arduino Pro Mini, which has the same processor but without the USB interface contact and circuits. Amazing.
