3D Printing with PETG Filament (CR10 3D Printing)

Post by bob195558 »

Printing first time with PETG filament
I purchased a roll of NOVA Maker PETG yellow filament.
I am still using the stock CR10 Hotend which I believe should be
upgraded to a V6 Hotend to achieve better printing results.
Printing RC-wheel with PETG_d.jpg
I started printing the RedCat Volcano EXP-Pro Truck rim-fb3
and after a few adjustments was able to get the first few layers
to print, what looked to be proper good printing.
RedCat Rim_fb3_PETG_a.jpg
I used Hotend temp 250c (482F) and print-bed temp at 110c (230F).
Room temp was about 24c (75F) and enclosure temp went as high as 37c (98F).
Printing time was about 9 hours and I opened the enclosure door several times
to check on how the printing process was doing.
When having the printing-enclosure door open the temperature dropped down
which I believe may have had a negative results to the rim being printed.

I have a video which (if you can see), shows the enclosure temperature fluctuating
up and down when I had opened and closed the printing enclosure door.
Video of rim being printed:

I have an exhaust-blower on my 3D Printing Enclosure which I had off until
the last several layers were being printed.
The top part of the rim failed to print properly when I had the blower turned on
which did lower the enclosure temperature down to about 32c (90F).
Turning the exhaust-blower on which lowered the enclosure temperature,
may have caused of the rim-print to failure.

When printing the hex drive part of the rim, has also failed to print properly.
I am not sure to what is the cause of this is yet as it can be several things.

Given the stringing the extruder temp seems too high.
PETG does not need a heated encolsure, and not even a heated bed. If you heat the bed 60°C is enough.

I've found that I had to slow the print speed to about 1/2 what I use for PLA. Your temps also seem a little high to me. PETG normally has excellent layer to layer bonding even at lower temps. Dropping the print speed solved a lot of problems for me.

Yes true that's commonly mentioned as a requirement, never had the need on my printer and with the particular PETG filaments I've used so forgot about it.Printed this at 80mm/s yesterday and it came out perfect.

Hi Kilrah and pmullen503,
Thank you for your reply's and info about printing with PETG filament.
There was not much info that came with this NOVA Maker PETG filament.
They did not provide (send with) any info for the Print-bed temperature
and for the Hotend they suggested between 220c to 260c temperature.
I was using the print setting for ABS as Simplify 3D (slicer programmer)
did not have a preset setting for PETG.
I have created a PETG profile in Simplify 3D.

Looking online I found more info for NovaMaker PETG filament:
Hotend Print Temperature: 230-260°C / (446-550°F)
Print-bed Temperature: No Heat Required/50-80°C
Print Speed: 50-100mm/s

Maybe with my next try, Hotend Temperature at 240c and Print-bed at 60c.
I will also look at the printing Speeds.
This is what I had in Simplify 3D for printing Speeds:

Here is some more photos of my first printing with the PETG filament.

Having trouble getting the first layer to print properly to the
EZMat with the Heated Print-Bed temperature being lower, which is set at 60°C.
Normally I used 65°C for eSun PLA.
Maybe my temperature sensor for my Heated Print-Bed is reading high
or this NovaMaker PETG filament needs higher temperatures .
First layer did work better at 210°C which is to high
and the temperature range that NovaMaker suggest for a heated print-bed is 50 to 80°C.
I will try 80°C next for the Print-bed temperature.

PETG heat bed at 80c.jpg

First Layer is printing better with Heated Print-Bed at 80°C.
The Hotend temperature is at 240°C
Need to let it print (give it a chance) to see how these temperatures perform
with this NovaMaker PETG filament.
PETG heat bed set to 80c_.jpg

Note: Having the Heated Print-Bed temperature lower will also lower the enclosure temperature.
Otherwise I could bake a cake in it. :D

Note that your "ezmat" has recommendations for various materials.

Re: 3D Printing with PETG Filament (TH3D EZMat and EZFlex Sheet) (CR10 3D Printing)

Post by bob195558 »

Thank you Kilrah, I some how had missed seeing this.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Using TH3D EZMat when printing PETG filament, set temp to: 70°C
· PETG has a tendency to bond to the EZMat surfaces to much (all brands can do this, not just ours).
We recommend using something in-between EZMat and the PETG to help it release easier.
You can use glue stick or hairspray to help prevent over bond from happening.
· We use our EZMat when printing with PETG, but we make sure we are not “squishing” it down
on the 1st layer as much as you would with PLA or other materials.
You can use the EZFlex sheet with a scraper to help remove with removing the finished print too.
You should NOT want to PULL ON THEM OR TRY TO “KNOCK” THEM OFF, be gentle when removing your finished print.
· We run our (Z-Offset) 1st layer a little higher about 0.3mm,
this will also ensure that the prints do not adhere as much to the EZMat.

Update: 80°C for the Heat Print-Bed seems to be working well for me.
Though there may be still some strings and not able to see yet how well or badly the PETG is bonding together.

Sorry for the late update, been busy with other things.
The lower temperatures have helped printing the PETG filament to bond together much better.
Hotend temp was 250c and lowered it to 240c.
Print-bed was 210c and lowered it to 80c.
Rim 2 fb3 PETG_f

The bad results, still the top outside ring of the rim has not bonded together all the way around.
But there is an improvement from the previous rim PETG printing.
There are more hairs then there were before
and not sure what this symptom is caused by or how to correct it.
The exterior finish is better, but can use still use a lot more improvement
as the bonding together also needs more improvement.

Here is an update
on 3D Printing RedCat Truck rims with PETG filament.
rim_design-fb3_PETG_RedCat_1aa.jpg

After several upgrades I am able to 3D Print
PETG filament without problems.

List of additional upgrades to the CR10 Printer:
1) TH3D EZBoard Lite V1.2 Control Board
https://www.th3dstudio.com/product/ezboard-lite/
2) TH3D Tough V6 Hotend Direct Drive Heatsink Extruder (E3D Titan Aero)
https://www.th3dstudio.com/product/th3d ... d-package/

I am printing the first rim (rim-design-fb3) that Madushan created as it has a thicker hub.
I also ran this STL file through the Netfabb Online Service which may have
fixed some troubles. https://service.netfabb.com/login.php?f ... mDH5ATEo8Y

When finished the rim-design-fb3 looks and feels strong.

It is winter here now
and so will need to wait until spring to test these new PETG rims.
