When the filament is getting caught (tangle) on the spool. (CR10 3D Printer)

Post by bob195558 »

When your filament is getting caught on the spool (tangle) how to fix this problem.

What has happened,
is when handling the spool of filament one to several of the
rapped filament strands have fall off the side
and not properly returning on to the spool.
If you look (study) closely, you will see the end filament strand that is coming off the spool
is under one or several of the other filament rapped strands.
When you are able to see this, pull the end filament strand back from under the filament strand or strands.
Then the filament will be able to exit the spool properly.
It can be difficult to see the problem.

The error comes about usually because when spool is first put to use ... or after use - the last few feet of filament 'twists' due to its being created and spooled at factory.

I have this happen on near every spool till I realised why.

New Spool - when freeing the end ... make sure the coils on the spool are HELD and not allowed to spring ... feed end into system and you should be good to go. When finished and you remove spool - keep those coils from springing ... and FIX end to avoid it loosening coils.

If the filament fouls and gets as under coils ... then do not roll spool to uncoil - this only transfers the twist further along. The trick is to keep spool fixed and then loosen the 2 or 3 fouled coils and slide of to the side, dropping them away. Keeping good coils held. Then rotate sideways the spool to remove the twists and then roll back onto spool.

Hello. I'm new to this forum and came across this thread. I only recently started to deal with new upcoming slots and I don't know much about them yet. Sorry if my question seems silly.
As I understand it, this is a common problem with printer extruders, but does this only happen on this model or on any printers? And can this happen on closed model printers?

Hi annanikolson,
Welcome to the 3D Printing Hobby.
This 3D Printing trouble is not with the extruders themselves,
but with the spool of filament.

Normally when handling your spool of filament you want to always keep the
end of the filament in hand, as not to let it go and unravel.
If the end of the filament does become unraveled,
it may become under one or several of the other filament layers,
which will then lock the whole roll of filament up when the Extruder
feeds the filament into the Hotend.

I am not sure I understand what you mean by (closed model printers).
If you are referring to a 3D printer which is in an Encloser,
then no this would have nothing to do this type of trouble.

Also here is a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlmCc-vRNr0

I hope this info is a help for you with your new 3D Printing Hobby. :D
