Re: Standard serial protocol to external module
good question! But how would you explain to your insurance that your plane with an certified receiver controlled by an certified RF module or even a certified Radio came down and hit somebody / something because of a bug in the (awesome!!) opensource firmware you flashed on it or because of a bad so...

Sounds good!
If you like to upload some photos of it please do so, usually its the first thing people look at when they want to build one themselves.

Re: Taranis and DSM2 mods
I'd like to have that, too. But to be honest, I don't need it. It is nice to have in case something doesn't work, but under normal use I rarely look at the back of my Taranis. :D I did not fix the humming and buzzing issue on my Taranis though, so this gives me an audible indication if the module is...

Re: Standard serial protocol to external module
Ah sure, I remember someone writing about bi-directional S.PORT telemetry in context to multirotor configuration I believe. I guess you implemented the update protocol in er9x? I did not stumble upon it in openTX :D Great to know that you already did a lot of what is discussed in this thread in some...

Re: Standard serial protocol to external module
SPI is not available in the module bay due to the limited amount of signal pins and the hardware limitations, in case of the Taranis the inverter on pin 5 for example. But as Mike already said, the DSM protocol already uses a serial protocol on pin 2 (-> TX) and S.PORT is basically an inverted seria...

Re: Standard serial protocol to external module
I agree with you that a somewhat standardized open protocol (e.g. openRF, openJR....) would give developers of open source modules like the openLRSng or this one http://www.deviationtx.com/forum/7-development/3154-single-board-universal-module the opportunity to settle on a powerful standard for com...

I changed the supplied 800mAh regular Self Discharge NiMh battery for a 3s 1800mAh LiFe battery (Zippy, HobbyKing). I am very happy with this battery, it fits the bay perfect and lasts forever, however as Mike said you have to take it out for every charge. If my Taranis came equipped with the newer ...

Re: Finishing up servo controller and I need a small favor..
A) What would you put in/on this servo controller based on your experience/desires: The useful applications for this kind of controller are quite limited I think, but if I'd need one, probably for a beefy Hexabot (needs at least 18 servos!) with an BeagleBone, RaspberryPi or Intel based controller....

Re: Orange DSM Module Photos
I don't know if it is that important, I just don't want to miss it. I am sure Hobbyking/HextronicLtd/OrangeRX is violating some patents in some aspect, but I am really not that interested in this. Spektrum / Horizon Hobby could easily kill them by offering their lowest-end parkflyer receivers at pri...

To check the contents of the internal SD card and to get your firmware version you have to enter the 'RADIO SETUP' menu by long pressing the 'MENU' button. Scroll through the pages with the 'PAGE' button, you are looking for the 'SD-HC CARD' menu and the 'SYSTEM INFO' (or similar) menu.

Re: My Taranis Spektrum module
Sure, your Taranis could be the problem. Without another known good JR module or alternatively a scope / logic analyzer you won't be able to tell though, you would have to measure the PPM pin in the module bay of your taranis. You could flash your 9XR with openTX and give it a go, but rather than in...

Thank you very much, Mike!
This would be well received by all the Taranis modders and everyone who wants to help in diagnosing problems like the ones described in this thread.

Re: My Taranis Spektrum module
I was hoping your problems were related to the firmware bug everyone else was affected by. Keep it up, next step is probably to try both RF modules in your DX5e I guess. The problem with building modules like these is the amount of variables that are responsible for its correct function. If just one...

Might be offtopic but not irrelevant: Are there any schematics of the Taranis publicly available? I guess you have one because of your work with FrSky and openTX, Mike. Is this covered by any NDAs or could you share it with us?

This is what I like to do, too. Mikes Bootloader is awesome for this! I rename each firmware file after download through companion from opentx-taranis-lua-en.bin to 2.0.11-opentx-taranis-lua-en.bin for example. I keep the firmwares directory of Companion and the FIRMWARES directory on the SD card of...

I can confirm that the most recent 2.0.11 works, too. (opentx-taranis-lua-en.bin)
I did not try anything between 2.0.5 and 2.0.11 though.
For details please see attached picture.
Thank you very much for resolving this issue!

Re: My Taranis Spektrum module
KAL, that's the topic I linked to 5 posts above :D Good on you for spotting it as well, though! :) Some multimeters have a capacitance mode, but this is usually found on meters costing 30$ or more. You can check if one of the caps is shorted though. But since you measured stable 3.3V on the PCB the ...

Re: My Taranis Spektrum module
I do not think ripping the components of is necessary, you might try to rework the solderjoints without pulling everything apart. If you have a multimeter you can measure your component values in circuit, just unplug the PCB from your Taranis and the RF module from your PCB.

I did not think of model match being patented by Horizon Hobby. You're right, by enabling this feature for Hobbykings module you would support them in violating a patent.Horizon as the original patent holder would propably get upset about this. I would like to see Horizon / Spektrum to sell their RF...

Re: My Taranis Spektrum module
I am on firmware 2.0.5, but I am not aware of any DSM related bugs in 2.0.8. I am running out of Ideas too, assuming both modules and your taranis are good there has to be a problem with your PCB. You might want to check for bad solder joints, misoriented parts or wrong component values. I would res...

I am going to integrate a R615X in my diy DM9 spektrum module, thats why I do not want to sacrifice pin 1 for binding. ;) That's just my personal use case though, others might appreciate binding via pin 1. This could be useful for the plug and play modules Aloft seems to be interested in making. I d...

Re: SBUS Trainer input
I personally think using pin 5 is too complicated and does not go well with the idea of keeping this plug and play. Pin 1 should work without additional circuitry, however one would lose the PPM output which limits you to using the internal module. Therefore it might be the best option to use a push...

Re: SBUS Trainer input
Would this interfere with the function of the internal XJT module? Pin 5 is used for the SMART Port, right? Wouldn't the internal module pull this pin low while receiving telemetry, or are there separate inputs for that?

This sounds awesome! How much effort would it be to implement a binding procedure for CPPM capable receivers? I am thinking of the OrangeRX R615X in particular (http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__46632__OrangeRx_R615X_DSM2_DSMX_Compatible_6Ch_2_4GHz_Receiver_w_CPPM.html). Bind Mode is entered by...

Re: My Taranis Spektrum module
I believe LP45 is only used for the low power 3-pin RF modules used in the small controller style remotes often bundled with eflite, Parkzone or Blade models, called LP4DSM or similar. Definitely not the right mode for your DX5e module. For your receivers DSM2 should work, even if they are DSMX capa...
