Head Tracker + Teacher/Student trainer Cable as PPM imput

Post by jhsa »

Just an Idea.. and I explain why..
Here apparently we're only allowed FPV if you have someone with you and other tx connected to yours in trainer mode..
well, some if not most of the people also use head trackers connected into the trainer plug..
Is there any circuit that could be built or some mod we could do to the 9x to accept both?? like combining both PPM signals?
then we could fly fpv more or less legally and also use the head tracker..

Thanks for your answers/ideas

You might want to try this: http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... Gyro_.html
Or this one seems more flexible (can choose channel mapping): http://fmtv.us/ppm_mixer.html

Thanks to the flexibility of the 9X the HK one should be enough. Just hope it has decent resolution, delay and reliability... AEO again...

Thanks.. And what do you think of this?? Just ocurred while asleep (ish) after a conversation with Groot

head tracker connects to student tx.. this tx transmitts to a rx with CPPM (Frsky D8R with CPPM firmware).. the combined signal goes into the master tx.. Done.

Wireless, and with er9x we can leave the head tracker always on even when master takes control..

It works, however from what I've tested this 9x->frsky->PPM RX->9x->frsky->plane setup introduces some very noticeable delay. As the "normal" TX the FPV flyer would use is the one that is at the beginning of the chain, he'll have to live with the delay which will likely be a pain. The opposite would be preferable, that the FPV flyer has the most direct path and the safety pilot has the longer delay (it matters less in normal flight than in FPV, even more so with a head tracker), and there the PPM mixer might be better. Wired connection between the TXs would be even better.
This would involve that the FPV flyer has to give control to the safety pilot instead of the safety pilot being able to override the FPV pilot. Not sure the dumbheads who wrote that stupid requirement in the first place are OK with this.

Another solution is 2 separate TX-RX systems and one of these in the plane:

But then it's bulky on the airborne side.

I understand what you mean.. And as far as I know it is required that the master tx takes control.. that means the spotter..
I don't know who the dumbheads that wrote this are, but I crtainly know a few other dumbheads that are going to make it even worse for us all.. enjoy it while you can..

this is one of them

OK,

I have just taken my first FPV flight, well half of one actually - I flew and landed FPV and my Safety Pilot, Pete, launched it for me. It is a Bixler 2 with HK/Foxtech 5.8 Ghz VYX/RX and AIO goggles. Both Master and Slave TX are ER9X (ER9X-NOHT and FRSKY-NOHT respectively) and there is a HK G-OSD onboard. I'll take some photos and put them up later.

Excellent, with a couple of brown adrenalin moments when the grass came into focus a little early - honour and aircraft saved by the Safety Pilot. The issue is that the Head-tracker is currently set to PPM 5 and 6, which works perfectly with a single TX but is unavailable in the Master/Slave setup. In addition I cannot get the flaps (Channel 7-8) to work from the Slave transmitter. The first question is, apart from Channels 1-4, which are set up in the ER9X software, do any other channels translate across from Slave to Master TX?

There is a possible hardware solution - I have read the thread about PPM mixers and got confused about the button pressing. Given that we are not worried about warranty issues, what about a second trainer socket on the slave system. This would be at the point where the combined PPM signal from the main board is about to feed the RF module.

This would require the Slave to use the same model profile as the Master, which is the "old" way and not normally required in ER9X.

This is not an issue on the slave TX but I am uncertain on the effect on the software of the Master TX and whether or not PPM 5-6 would reach the Master TX RF board. It might require a duplicate socket on the Master TX.

Has any one done this and are there any known issues?

Is this (retrograde) step actually necessary or is there a simpler software fix?

Regards

Alan

Easier than this. On the student TX, connect the HT to the trainer port. Remove the module, and pick the PPM and ground from the module pins. Run that into the master radio's trainer socket.
Alternatively you can put a module (for example frsky DJT) in the student radio, and connect a receiver with PPM output (D8RXP, D4FR, D4R-II) to the master radio, and have it all wireless :D

Congrats for the first FPV :)

Hi Kilrah,

Thank you for the reply. The student radio is my Frsky modded ER9X and I have a D4R-II. I think it is just matter of putting a bridge in the RX and reading the PPM - I will check.

Thanks again.

Yep, it works. I'll post the photos after I've flown it.
