Stick Replacement

Post by Flaps 30 »

I am getting the urge to replace the throttle stick (which is my flap/brake control) with one that has a momentary press on switch as shown below. The switch would be used for fan off/on control.

So. Has anyone tried removing the original stick? The one in the picture has roughly the same diameter as the one in the 9X transmitter, so it would fit without too much effort.

Any suggestions?

Just grabbed an old stick with a faulty pot. The stick is just "pushed" into the plastic with a splined end. Clearly a tight fit, it did just pull straight out when gripped very firmly with some pliers.

Thanks for the sacrifice Mike. Appreciated. :)

After much grunting along with wrecking the shaft pulling it out, there was a nice hole that went pretty deep. A small 2mm hole was drilled in the side of the stick holder for the wire,, along with enlarging the hole for the new joystick.

Some care is needed to ensure no strain is put on the plastic parts. The material isn't that strong and it won't put up with bending as I found out during the disassembly of the gimbal.

Here are the results so far,

Cheers... As you can see João. This isn't an ideal modification for thumb fliers and in some ways a good reason to convert your style. ;)

I have all the switches where I need them.. well, after I swap the trainer switch and the throttle cut switch that is.. I will have the same switch you put on the stick, but on the back of the radio.. Actually, we thumb flyers could have 4 of them. one for each finger  Actually 8 if you count both hands :) Can't do that with a tray radio?? And we thumb flyers can also make use of another joystick on the back of the radio.. I think I can see more advantages on flying using the thumbs ;)
hmmmm, now you got me thinking. I wonder how many more switches the skyboard could have ;) :)

No problem, the stick push back in OK. One of the pots is bad on that gimbal anyway.
