I have just done a first backup of my new 9XD plus 2019 and the bin file is saved as normal, when I double click on the bin file it says cant extract data and starts to open the old version of companion. If I open 2.3.14 first and do file open it can read it?

looks like you have multiple versions of companion installed and it's the old one that's registered to open .bin files in Windows.
