Has anyone used a quadcopter esc on a wing?

I ordered a regular 30a esc for a wing and it's huge. I figured I'd try a tiny emax bullet and separate 3a bec because it's so much smaller than the original esc/bec.
I thought I'd be able to program it through the radio but it looks like all I can do is calibrate the throttle. It also has braking enabled automatically.
It seems like it should be legit, the RDQ 2207 is spinning fast and smooth on 4s and this tiny esc saved me a bunch of precious room inside the canopy.

Yes you can.
It has been some time ago that I messed with programming ESC's.
You should have a paper or get instructions on the internet for how to program your new ESC.
Normally there is a sequences of radio stick movements and ESC's beeps to go through to do the coding process.
With most ESC's you were able to turn the brake option off.

Most quad ESCs do not have any stick-based configuration interface, need to use a PC-based tool. They also usually don't offer the options an airplane ESC does since they're irrelevant for quads, they have different multirotor-related options instead (that you don't really care about on a plane...)
On most newer ones (BlHeli-s and BlHeli32) it is not even possible to disable braking since you always want it on a performance multirotor.

Need to point to the exact ESC you have if you want more info.

im using mini quad esc more often now on my S800 and ARWing and planes
first the SN20A and now my fav XS30A DYS
Bench tests show a 450ma less current draw on my XS30A

You just have to make sure the nut is tight as you cant turn off breaking

I believe that to be true, there has been more work to get Quad ESC's
to be more efficient, because of there short flying time.

Quads use: 4 motors, which each motor needs to be
using more of the battery power to stay in the air.

Planes use: 1 motor, which can be throttled down when at altitude
and glide on up-drafts and when returning to the ground.

Depends on the plane.. On my 1.3 Kilo tricopter I was getting nearly the same flight time as some other models, using the same battery :) tricopter has obviously 3 motors and a metal gear servo :) and mine is heavy :D

I have always thought that tricopters would be more popular.
They are (can be) lighter, faster and fly longer.
Some of the early video's looked to show them to be very maneuverable too.
